Job Title: Secondary (Protection & Control) Substation Design Engineers - All Levels
Location: Stafford

Role Summary:
The Secondary (Protection & Control) Design Engineer will lead or support the design and engineering of Secondary Protection & Control (P&C) systems for high-voltage substations (132kv - 400kv), ensuring compliance with National Grid's design standards, grid codes, and project-specific requirements. This role supports the safe, secure, and reliable operation of the UK transmission network.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce and review detailed secondary designs including:
- Protection schematics and wiring diagrams
- Control and interlocking logic
- Alarm and indication schemes
- Interface arrangements with National Grid SCADA/telecontrol systems
- Prepare Protection & Control design deliverables in compliance with National Grid's Technical Specifications (e.g., TS 3.24.04, TS 3.24.13, TS 3.24.17) and Engineering Standards (NGESO).
- Select and specify protection relays and control panels (e.g., Siemens, GE, ABB).
- Develop protection settings for feeder, transformer, and busbar protection (e.g., distance, differential, REF).
- Collaborate with primary, civil, telecoms, and SCADA teams to ensure coordinated, integrated designs.
- Support production of design packs for Construction & Commissioning (P&C schematics, CT/VT schedules, panel wiring diagrams, cable schedules, etc.).
- Attend and lead design reviews, technical assurance meetings, and FAT/SAT testing.
- Interface with National Grid, EPC contractors, DNOs, OEMs, and internal stakeholders.
- Provide technical support during installation and commissioning phases.
- Ensure designs comply with CDM regulations, cyber security guidelines (NCSC), and IEC/BS/ENA standards.
Qualifications & Experience Required:
- Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
- Proven experience in protection & control design for National Grid substation projects at 132kv - 400kv level.
- Strong working knowledge of National Grid technical documents, such as TP106, TS 3.24.XX series, and NETS SQSS.
- Hands-on experience with:
- Protection relay configuration (e.g., Siemens Siprotec, ABB Relion, GE Multilin)
- Autocad/EPlan or similar CAD tools
- Producing and interpreting SLDs, wiring diagrams, logic charts
