Role Summary:
To lead or support the design and development of primary high-voltage substations (up to 400kv), ensuring compliance with National Grid standards (including the National Electricity Transmission System Owner - NETSO - requirements), safety, environmental legislation, and client specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake the full lifecycle of substation primary design including feasibility, outline, and detailed design.
- Prepare technical specifications for electrical plant and substation upgrades
- Produce design deliverables in line with National Grid's Technical Specification documents (e.g., TS 3.02.01, TS 2.02.07).
- Coordinate design interfaces between civil, electrical, and protection/control disciplines for obtaining concurrence in design specifications.
- Prepare and check detailed designs including single-line diagrams (SLDs), general arrangement drawings (GAs), layout drawings, earthing studies, busbar configurations, and equipment specifications.
- Ensure compliance with NGESO (National Grid Electricity System Operator) design standards and security of supply requirements.
- Engage with stakeholders including National Grid, DNOs, consultants, and EPC contractors.
- Attend and Lead/Contribute to Design Review and Contract Close-out Meetings, ensuring follow-up actions are completed promptly.
- Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
Qualifications & Experience Required:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Proven experience in primary substation design at 132kV, 275kV, or 400kV levels.
- Previous project work involving National Grid assets, with a strong understanding of NG's design governance and approval processes.
- Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and ETAP or other modelling tools.
- Experience working with specifications such as TP106, TS 3.01.02, and TGN documents.
- Familiarity with CDM Regulations and health and safety best practices.
