Huntingdon AcademyJob Description: OPAL Play Leader with Midday Responsibilities Hours: 10 hours per week Reports to: Opal Play Leader and Co-ordinator ________________________________________ Purpose of the Role To lead and develop the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme within Huntingdon Academy, providing a range of engaging, safe, and inclusive play opportunities for all pupils. Additionally, to supervise pupils during the midday period in the hall and playground, promoting positive behaviour, wellbeing, and safe play experiences. ________________________________________ Play Leader Responsibilities • Supervise pupils during lunch, ensuring their safety and wellbeing at all times. • Promote positive behaviour through consistent, fair, and restorative approaches in line with the school’s values. • Encourage inclusive and cooperative play, supporting children to manage social interactions confidently. • Support children in understanding both the risks and benefits of their play activities, helping them make safe, balanced choices. • Carry out dynamic risk assessments to respond to changing conditions or behaviours during playtime. • Support collaborative play and help children resolve conflicts using restorative practices. • Promote children’s awareness of risk-benefit thinking, encouraging them to assess and manage their own play choices. • Liaise with teaching and support staff to communicate any concerns or observations. • Support pupils with additional needs as required during the midday period. • Assist with setting up and tidying play areas before and after lunch. ________________________________________ Midday Responsibilities • Supervise pupils in the dining hall, ensuring a calm, safe, and positive lunchtime environment. • Support pupils in developing good table manners and positive social interactions during mealtimes. • Assist younger pupils with opening food packaging and cutting food as needed. • Promote positive behaviour and uphold the school’s values throughout the lunchtime period. • Monitor children to ensure they eat sufficient and appropriate food during lunch. • Clean up spillages and maintain a tidy, hygienic dining area. • Report any accidents, incidents, or concerns to the relevant staff following school procedures. • Support pupils with additional needs during mealtimes, ensuring they feel included and supported. ________________________________________ Skills and Qualities Required • Passionate about children’s play and outdoor learning. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Ability to motivate and engage children of all ages and abilities. • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail. • Confidence in facilitating restorative conversations and promoting positive conflict resolution. • Understanding of risk-benefit practice in children’s play, and confidence in supporting this. • Experience working with children in a school or play setting is desirable. • Sound understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures. • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. • Patient, approachable, and adaptable. ________________________________________ Qualifications • Relevant experience in play leadership, childcare, education, or similar. • First Aid qualification desirable but not essential (training can be provided). • Enhanced DBS clearance required. ________________________________________ Working Conditions • Outdoor and indoor work in various weather conditions. • Active supervision and physical activity involved.
Hours: Part-time, Term Time Only (10 hours a week, to include lunchtimes 11:30am – 1:30pm daily). Salary: NJC PayScale - scale 2 Location: Huntingdon Academy, Alfred Street Central, St Anns NG34AY Contract Type: 1 year Fixed-term in the first instance possible extension after one year Start Date: September 2025
