Do you have a conservation qualification or relevant conservation experience? Do you want to oversee the day-to-day conservation of objects in the Type Archive collection?
About us
The 545-acre Science and Innovation Park is the home of the Science Museum Group's National Collections Centre (NCC), our hub for collections management and access. The National Collections Centre is transforming how we care, manage, and make accessible over 400,000 objects and 1.5M items in our Library and Archive. A new collections management facility houses a vast range of objects in the collection from microscope slides to railway carriages, other objects are stored in repurposed aircraft hangars, sustainable hempcrete constructed buildings and other facilities dispersed across the park.
There's something really special about working at the Science and Innovation Park. You are surrounded by the stunning Wiltshire countryside, with ever-changing weather, spectacular sunsets and lots of wildlife to spot as you move around the site. But the best part of the National Collections Centre is the people, you'll be joining a wonderful and passionate community of individuals.
We are looking for a motivated and knowledgeable Conservator to work alongside a Conservator (Paper and Archive) and the wider Type Archive project team. This position is based at the National Collections Centre, at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton within the Collection Services Department.
About the role
This role will work closely with the project team delivering Collections Reviews of both the Monotype Collection owned by SMG and the Stephenson Blake Collection on loan from the V&A. As Project Conservator you will assess, prioritise and complete conservation treatments focused on three key areas of the project: interventive conservation, packing and storage and pest and hazard management. You will also support with assessing condition and hazards in preparation for curatorial assessment and will work closely with the registration team coordinating transfers and removals resulting from the reviews.
Working with Science Museum Group policies and protocolsthe post holder will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice.
The Monotype Collection is formed of extensive company archives, machines, patterns, punches and matrices for over 5,000 different fonts such as Gill Sans, Times New Roman and Bembo. Stephenson Blake has connections back to early typography of the 15th century and its collections cover a wide range of type faces, many of which used in books published since 1720.
This role is a fixed term contract until March 2026, advertised for 35 hours per week working Monday to Friday, 4 days on site, 1 day from home.
About you
We're keen to see applications from candidates who have awareness of hazards commonly found in museum collections and who can demonstrate sound knowledge of Health and Safety practices and safe ways of working. As this role sits within a close-knit conservation team, solid team-working skills are essential, alongside an understanding of best practice in the storage and housing of objects.
The ideal candidate will have a recognised conservation qualification or equivalent practical experience and will be able to demonstrate effective practical skills in condition reporting and the remedial conservation of 3D objects, alongside good planning, resourcing, and prioritisation abilities. While experience of conservation work within museums or cultural heritage organisations is ideal, we also welcome applications from those who have gained relevant practical skills in other settings.
Proficient written and verbal communication skills, good IT proficiency (including collections databases like MIMSY XG and image editing software) are all highly desirable. Experience with scientific, technical, engineering, modern materials, medical or printing collections, or with large or industrial objects, would also be an advantage, but not essential.
