The Role
We’re recruiting for a GIS Data Manager here at the Ministry of Justice, to be part of our warm and collaborative Data Improvement Team, within the Data Directorate.
We are passionate about improving justice outcomes through innovative research, data, and analysis. In the Data Directorate, we provide high-quality data and analysis to ensure strategic, policy, finance, corporate, and operational decisions are based on robust evidence.
We create a culture in which people are empowered with the data and information to make excellent decisions; using cutting-edge tools, techniques, and collaboration; putting evidence at the heart of the justice system.
We launched our data strategy for MoJ and are working on improvements across data governance, architecture, literacy, culture, dissemination, and linking. You can read more about the Data Strategy in this blog post.
As a GIS Data Manager, you’ll support teams across the MoJ to understand and implement best practices in spatial data management and exploiting GIS technologies to make best use from spatial data. You’ll support developing the GIS Strategy for the department, ensuring GIS and well managed spatial data is available for a wide range of business areas. You will also contribute to the continuous improvement of our data management outputs such as data ownership and data quality frameworks.
Having a GIS post within the Ministry of Justice is crucial for several reasons. GIS technology allows for the visualization, analysis, and interpretation of spatial data, which can significantly enhance decision-making processes. For an organization like the MoJ, GIS can help in mapping crime patterns, managing resources efficiently, and improving public safety. It provides a powerful tool for analysing geographic and demographic data, leading to more informed and effective policies and strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
• Support the development of a GIS Strategy and Roadmap: Assist in developing a strategy and roadmap to ensure the department makes best use of GIS and spatial data.
• Support the implementation and management of spatial data frameworks, policies, and standards: Assist in developing and enforcing guidelines to ensure spatial data quality across the organisation.
• Support the development of key GIS tools and services: Provide expertise in existing and emerging GIS solutions across the organisation.
• Identify opportunities for improvement: Make recommendations to enhance the quality and trustworthiness of data throughout the organisation.
• Minimize data risks: Work across the organisation to reduce data-related risks and increase awareness of data quality issues.
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders: Ensure clear communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders, supporting discussions within multidisciplinary teams.
• Advocate for better spatial data use and management: Promote the importance of spatial data and associated GIS and encourage best practices across the organisation.

Strong understanding of spatial data management and GIS: Possess practical knowledge of spatial data management and GIS solutions.
Multi-disciplinary team working: Able to work across multiple data teams contributing towards an effective data value chain focusing on data quality.
Excellent organisational skills: The ability to keep own projects on track, with an appreciation of programme/project management tools and techniques.
We are recruiting using a combination of the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability and Success Profiles Frameworks.
A diverse panel will review your application against the Person Specification above.
Successful candidates who meet the required standard will then be invited to a 1 hour panel interview held via video conference
Should we receive a high volume of applications, a pre-sift based on Strong understanding of spatial data management and GIS: Possess practical knowledge of spatial data management and GIS solutions will be conducted before the sift.
