Pay rate: £20.86 per hour PAYE



The role:

We are seeking a competent and proactive Payroll Officer who has experience of using Oracle and who has previous experience working in payroll.

This position is expected to become permanent in the near future, making it a great opportunity for candidates seeking a long-term role, pending a successful recruitment process.



Key duties:

Accurately calculate gross and net pay in line with statutory and contractual requirements, ensuring all transactions are processed on time and discrepancies resolved before payroll finalisation
Respond to payroll queries from staff, managers, and third parties within agreed timescales, ensuring resolutions are reflected in payroll transactions
Deliver a high standard of customer service to all payroll stakeholders, including employees, managers, and external parties
Provide clear guidance on payroll processes, including tax, National Insurance, statutory and contractual pay entitlements, and local pay policies
Maintain a strong understanding of statutory and contractual payroll requirements, including PAYE, NI, NMW, London Living Wage, LGPS, Teachers’ Pension Scheme, SSP, statutory/contractual family and sick pay
Support Senior Payroll Officers in the accurate and timely delivery of all payrolls and associated outputs throughout the payroll cycle
Run regular and ad-hoc payroll processes, such as provisional payslip calculations, and update employee data to ensure payroll accuracy
Regularly review key payroll data (e.g. tax codes, NI categories, pension memberships) to ensure accurate pay calculations for all staff
Input payroll data for new starters into Oracle (e.g. payment method, bank details, tax code, NI category, pension, pay elements) as part of daily processing



What the client is looking for:

Previous experience working in payroll
Solid grasp of payroll processes, including statutory and non-statutory requirements, with the ability to advise staff on pay calculations
Strong understanding of pay components and the factors affecting gross and net pay
Hands-on experience with payroll systems and managing pay data
Knowledge of pension scheme rules and employer obligations affecting payroll
Familiarity with payroll duties related to the Local Government Pension Scheme and Teachers’ Pensions
Awareness of government pay guidance and best practices, with the initiative to consult official sources
Skilled in complex payroll calculations
Proficient in Excel with strong accuracy for payroll data analysis
Clear and confident communicator, able to explain payroll matters to varied audiences
Able to perform under pressure, meeting tight deadlines without compromising accuracy or quality
