About the Job

Interview Date: 6 August 2025

Part time - Term Time Only: 18.5 hours per week - 40 weeks per year

ASSIST (Additional Support & Inclusion Services Team) are seeking to appoint an experienced and highly motivated Electronic Notetaker to join our diverse and busy service at the University of Northampton. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing support to an agreed timetable of students with varying needs and disabilities across all university sites. This will include working remotely using relevant digital platforms when students have on-line lectures.

Principal duties will include attending lectures and other course-related activities and taking notes and live records (speech-to-text reporting) on the content to either serve as a reliable record or to facilitate interaction and provide communication support.

We want you to be able to carry out your work in a way that best supports UON and our students, but also you as an individual. We understand this may vary between different areas of the university as well as from one person to another. With Smarter Working you can work with increased flexibility, if you would like to, which can facilitate greater freedom and autonomy.

This post is subject to a background disclosure check by the Disclosure and Barring Service before any appointment can be confirmed.

About you

Possessing excellent standards of English, you will be a proficient typist (50-60 wpm) and have a robust working knowledge of standard MS Office and video conferencing applications.

Experience of working with deaf and/or disabled persons would be desirable but is not essential as training will be provided. You should have the ability to work well under pressure and be able to work on your own initiative. Being a proven team player is vital, as well as exercising discretion and confidentiality always. You will also be able to demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, together with a commitment to enabling disabled students to achieve their potential. A flexible attitude to working hours is desirable, with lectures occasionally running into the early evening.

Student support requirements will take place both onsite (all sites) and remotely online.

Essential:

HE Qualification (HND; Foundation degree; ordinary degree)
Qualification and/or specialist training in electronic notetaking, e.g. Open College Network London Region (OCNLR), Action on Hearing Loss, Stereotype, or equivalent (or willingness to complete necessary training and qualification* within the first 12 months) *The costs of the training and qualification to be met by the University

Desirable:

Degree with honours
Membership of the Association of Notetaking Professionals (ANP) which is the professional body representing Electronic and Manual Notetakers
Qualification and/or training in disability support and awareness
Qualification relating to proofreading/text checking
