The main service commitment of Clinical Fellows is to provide shop floor support and supervision to the FY2s and Nurse Practitioners and to undertake direct patient care alongside the other middle grades, supervised by the Consultant team. There is Consultant presence on the shop floor for 16 hours (8 am to midnight), 7 days a week, ensuring Clinical Fellows good support and learning opportunities. The department has initiated new patterns of working to improve performance and integral within these are the ED controller role, Resuscitation lead and the Senior Team for Assessment and Rapid Response (STARR). These roles and processes ensure the early assessment of all patients by a senior decision maker and good oversight of the whole ED. The middle grade doctors within the department as senior clinical decision makers rotate into these roles. The Consultants are very committed to teaching and will ensure appropriate opportunities for professional development. The appointee will be expected to already have or to have obtained during the course of the appointment certificates in ATLS, APLS and ALS. Two Clinical Educators have recently been appointed in HEE supported posts, to provide even more dedicated Clinical teaching availability. The rota is a full shift pattern providing 24-hour cover to the ED with 1:3 weekends. The post holder will be expected to provide mainly out of hours clinical work in the ED which can be negotiable with the rota coordinator. The post holder will contribute to the rota to provide senior EM cover to the department 24 hours a day to maintain high quality consistent patient care and ensure patient safety. The post holder will be encouraged to participate in several management activities with the specific aim of developing key management skills which are needed in future Consultant posts. The post holder will uphold and display the Trust values of Commitment, Care & Quality in all they do.
