A Basic DBS is required for this role.

The job can be remote working or office based depending on the preference of the candidate.



The role:

In line with current legislation and Council policy, you will be responsible for assessing eligibility for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support.

This includes gathering and verifying the required information to ensure accurate and timely processing of claims, awarding the correct entitlements, and applying the appropriate Housing Benefit subsidy where applicable. You will also manage and process changes in circumstances within set timeframes.



Key responsibilities:

Receive and assess Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims via post, counter, email, and online, determining eligibility based on age, accommodation, and personal circumstances in line with legislation and council policy
Gather necessary documentation from claimants, landlords, third parties, DWP, and HMRC, using proactive methods (e.g., phone calls) to speed up processing
Calculate entitlement for Housing Benefit and Council Tax under current legislation and schemes, and notify customers and landlords of outcomes
Record and action changes of circumstances from various sources (claimants, landlords, ATLAS, VEP, UCDS), ensuring claims are updated promptly
Identify suspicious claims and refer to the DWP’s Fraud and Error Service when necessary
Keep clear, detailed records of all decisions on the digital system
Arrange the periodic review of claims as appropriate
Issue invoices for Housing Benefit overpayments and recover through ongoing entitlement or other legal methods
Provide Housing Benefit and Council Tax advice including DWP benefits like Universal Credit), and work collaboratively with internal departments and external stakeholders



What the client is looking for:

English and Maths GCSE grade C or above or proven literacy and numeracy skills
Significant relevant current and demonstrable experience of assessing claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support
Ability to understand, interpret and explain complicated government legislation and the ability to keep up to date with frequent legislative and procedural changes
Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to support and negotiate with customers, landlords and stakeholders in a calm, sensitive way in difficult situations
Ability to demonstrate awareness and understanding of equal opportunities and other people’s behaviour, physical, social and welfare needs
Computer literate
Ability to work to deadlines and Government targets
