The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences

This new part-time post (0.4FTE) is available immediately on a fixed term basis until 31/03/2026 and offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on campus and some from home.

We welcome applications from candidates interested in job-sharing arrangements.

The post

We are looking for a proactive Postdoctoral Research Associate or Graduate Research Assistant to join an NIHR-funded project focused on increasing young men’s participation in mental health research. This group is often underrepresented, and the project will use participatory methods to explore how to support their engagement.

The study will use Photovoice (photography and storytelling) and Appreciative Inquiry (a strengths-based approach) to understand what enables participation and to test these methods in practice.

The role involves working closely with the Principal Investigator while also taking initiative in key areas—especially participant recruitment, workshop facilitation, data collection, and analysis. Mixed methods experience, particularly in qualitative research, and an interest in inclusive, participatory approaches are essential.

About you

The successful applicant will have an interest in participatory approaches to mental health research and a commitment to working with groups who are often underrepresented—specifically young men. You will be confident working independently, able to manage their time effectively, and comfortable taking initiative in day-to-day tasks.

You will be able to engage young men in research through clear communication, persistence, and a sensitive approach to discussing mental health. You will be organised, reliable, and able to manage logistics such as arranging workshops and coordinating research activities.

Experience with mixed methods research is important. You will be able to collect and analyse qualitative data using NVivo and carry out quantitative analysis using Jamovi, or be willing to learn. You will value lived experience and be committed to producing research that is inclusive, ethical, and impactful.

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

For Graduate Research Assistant, applicants will be educated to first degree level or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study or equivalent experience and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

For Postdoctoral Research Associate, applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.

Please note that candidates will need to have access to a car or willingness to take public transport given the travel requirement of this role.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of these roles.
