You’ll identify and plan maintenance needs, arrange or personally carry out repairs, and oversee improvements with a structured approach that prioritises guest satisfaction and safety. Where appropriate, you’ll coordinate volunteer workers, providing clear guidance and support while fostering a collaborative environment. Your focus will be on maintaining high standards, ensuring your hostel is safe, well-maintained and welcoming for all who visit.Why work for YHA?Join our team and enjoy a range of exclusive staff benefits that support your well-being and career growth:10 nights free hostel stays per year for you and up to 3 friends or familyAccess to YHA’s staff discount and cash back portalFree YHA Membership each yearAccess to support via our Employee Assistance ProgramThere are many more benefits to working for YHA so please visit our YHA Jobs website for more information.What will you be doing as a Maintenance Manager?Working with your Regional Building Surveyor and the Facilities Management Team you will be:Carry out repairs and maintenance across multiple hostels-everything from painting and joinery to basic plumbing, flooring, decorating, and external repairs (e.g., potholes, fencing, tiling).Handle preventative and reactive maintenance, using our Access Maintain system to log, manage and resolve issues quickly and efficiently.Improve facilities in partnership with surveyors and safety teams-ensuring guest areas meet standards and feel well-cared-for.Work with contractors to deliver more complex jobs-giving direction, overseeing work, and ensuring great outcomes on time.Keep accurate records of work carried out, contractor performance, and maintenance schedules through Access Maintain.Enhance the guest experience by ensuring the hostel is safe, well-maintained, and operating smoothly.Follow safety protocols and risk assess maintenance work, keeping site-based records in line with inspections and audits.Ensure safe access around hostel grounds in poor weather-like snow clearance or gritting.What Skills and Experience do you need to be a Maintenance Manager?We are looking for candidates with the following qualities:A positive, proactive attitude and pride in maintaining welcoming, well-presented hostels.A clean, full UK driving licence.Proven experience in facilities or property maintenance, including: General building repairs, joinery and decorating, working with contractorsUnderstanding of building safety standards and compliance.Basic IT and building system knowledge (e.g., automated systems).A commitment to safe working practices and risk management in line with YHA policies.Support for environmental sustainability goals in daily tasks.Ability to keep hostel access safe during adverse weather (e.g., snow clearing, gritting).Confident in working with external contractors and overseeing timely, high-quality results.Willingness to attend relevant training courses to stay up to date and safe.Desirable:Relevant trade qualifications (e.g., City & Guilds, NVQ).Experience managing multiple sites in a hospitality setting.Leadership skills or experience managing a small team.For more information about the role and the skills and experience required, please refer to the job description.Who are YHA?YHA is a social enterprise with a mission to enrich the lives of all, especially young people.
