We're seeking a compassionate, experienced Deputy Head of Care to take on a full-time, overnight leadership role within a specialist SEMH school in the Essex area. This is a permanent position with shifts running from 8:00pm to 7:30am, supporting the residential provision for vulnerable young people with social, emotional and mental health needs.

This role goes beyond night supervision - you'll provide essential guidance to care staff, ensure safeguarding and therapeutic care is upheld at all times, and act as a key point of support for students who may struggle most during the quieter hours. Working alongside the Head of Care, you'll help lead, mentor, and develop a stable team delivering consistent, high-quality support.

The school values trauma-informed practice, consistent routines, and strong professional boundaries. You'll play a vital role in maintaining a calm and responsive environment where young people can feel safe, respected, and supported - no matter what time it is.

This role comes with excellent conditions under the NJC Grade 5 (Fringe) pay scale, recognising the leadership responsibility and commitment it entails. The team culture is strong, and professional development is actively encouraged.

If you've got leadership experience in a care or residential setting, alongside a resilient, nurturing approach, this could be your next meaningful step.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide overnight leadership and oversight across the residential setting
• Support, guide, and mentor care staff during night shifts
• Ensure all safeguarding, safety and behaviour protocols are upheld
• Offer emotional and practical support to students overnight
• Respond appropriately to incidents, disclosures, or care concerns
• Maintain detailed records, logs and reports in line with policy
• Liaise with the Head of Care and other professionals as needed

Qualifications and Experience

• Experience in a residential or care leadership role
• Deep understanding of SEMH, trauma-informed care and safeguarding
• Strong team leadership, mentoring and communication skills
• Calm, confident and professional during overnight hours
• Level 3 or above in Health & Social Care (or equivalent) preferred
• Knowledge of children's residential standards and best practice
• Full-time availability, including night shifts

SENDirect is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

All applicants will be subject to enhanced DBS checks and online screening in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance. Right to work in the UK is essential, and we are unable to offer sponsorship.
