Job title:- Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine

Location:- London Spinal Cord Injury Centre

Hours:- 9 PA’s

Duration:- Substantive

An opportunity to provide extended leave cover is available at The London Spinal Cord Injury Centre (LSCIC) at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, which was established in 1981. It moved into purpose-built accommodation in 1984 and is one of only 11 in the UK designated to receive and treat spinal cord injured patients. The Centre currently has 33 beds for adults, children and young people. These beds include beds for first episode of rehabilitation and designated beds for planned short term rehabilitation admissions or for surgical management of pressure ulcers. Patients may also be admitted to the Children’s and Young Person’s unit.

The consultant staff comprises of 4 other consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine (Dr Jan Gawronski, Mr Manish Desai, Dr Alex Lowe, Dr Verity Thakur) with input from orthopaedic/spinal surgeons, neurosurgeons, psychiatry, urologists, microbiology, anaesthetics, ITU medicine with respiratory/ ventilatory support and plastic surgery. The inpatient and outpatient clinical workload is shared equally between the consultants: annually approximately 100 new referrals are admitted for rehabilitation and approximately 3000 outpatients attend the centre.

The appointee will:
• Provide in-patient and out-patient medical and rehabilitation care to patients referred to the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre (LSCIC), alongside the present consultants in rehabilitation medicine
• Work with the multidisciplinary team to deliver a comprehensive rehabilitation and reintegration package
• Be responsible for on-going review of patients discharged from the unit to provide continuing medical support and promote health and social reintegration
• Have the opportunity to develop a special clinical interest related to the biopsychosocial management of spinal cord injury
• Contribute to research in the field of spinal cord injury
• Take part in teaching & research activities in the centre & hospital & contribute to research projects within the centre
• Actively participate in the centre & hospital clinical audit
• Participate in a range of CPD activities appropriate for a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine practising within a Spinal Cord Injury Centre
• Undertake annual appraisal and 5 yearly revalidation as per GMC requirements
• Contribute to the policies and the administrative development of the unit and the hospital as a whole
• Provide 1 week in 4 offsite on-call for LSCIC patients
