The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow possesses a large internationally rated Engineering Faculty with a proud history of successful joint ventures with industrial and enterprise partners. As part of the University’s strategic development the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), part of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), has been established near Glasgow’s International Airport. The AFRC is the embodiment of a £30 million collaborative investment by Industrial, Academic and Government partners seeking to establish a world-leading research facility for forging and forming technologies.

The AFRC is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Assistant R&D Engineer, to support the delivery of high value research and knowledge exchange programmes related to cold incremental forming through applied experimental research activity and introduce the outcomes into manufacturing environments. This will involve the candidate working between the AFRC and its industrial partners and there will be a strong emphasis on knowledge exchange and process improvement.

This post will be based within the Forging & Incremental Technologies team, reporting directly to the Cold Incremental Forming Theme Lead. Incremental manufacturing technologies such as shear, flow and spin forming are differentiating capability within the AFRC at NMIS and a key strategic are in developing sustainable, innovative metal forming solutions for cross-sectoral customers across the UK, Europe and USA. This role presents a unique opportunity to work within a small, experienced team and develop specialist capability to support the development of novel forming techniques for high value applications.

As an Assistant R&D Engineer you will work across a number of projects and contribute to the development of the technical capability in the AFRC.

To achieve the above the Assistant R&D Engineer will require research and/or industrial experience in the following technical areas:
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes, product design and development methods and an understanding of knowledge exchange within the design and manufacturing field. Practical experience is desirable.
• An ability to plan and organise your own workload effectively with general supervision from senior colleagues, and ability to work as part of a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to interact and communicate results across a multi-disciplinary team.

Under the guidance of a Project Lead, the Assistant R&D Engineer will support AFRC research programmes and the development and operation of manufacturing capability, including knowledge exchange with partners and customers. In particular, the post holder will be expected to contribute to research programmes with a manufacturing engineering focus, and deliver solutions to the AFRC’s industrial partners. This will involve undertaking literature reviews; engineering design of parts and tooling; obtaining quotations, placing orders and managing lead times; building relationships with the project team, colleagues across NMIS and third-party suppliers; interpreting and reporting results of development trials (written and oral); supporting the production of reports and presentations to meet project requirements; working with the relevant equipment operator to define, and run experimental trials.
