Head of School - Alternative Provision (Full-Time, Permanent)
Location: Birkenhead, Wirral
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Contract Type: Permanent | Full Time
Are you a dynamic and committed educational leader ready to make a real impact on young people outside of mainstream education?
We are seeking a passionate Head of School to lead a specialist alternative provision setting in Birkenhead. This is a full-time, permanent role ideal for someone with strong leadership experience, especially within an SEN, SEMH or AP setting, who is ready to drive positive change for both students and staff.
About the School
This small alternative provision school supports pupils aged 11-16 with a range of social, emotional and behavioural needs. Situated within a vibrant youth facility, the school benefits from outstanding resources and encourages participation in extracurricular activities that support pupils' wider development. Pupils are taught in small groups (typically 4-6 learners per class), in a nurturing and structured environment. The school runs an effective reintegration programme for KS3 students, aiming to support successful returns to mainstream education wherever possible.
The Role
As Head of School, you will:
✅ Inspire and lead a dedicated team, creating a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement
✅ Oversee curriculum delivery, safeguarding, compliance, and quality assurance
✅ Support teaching and learning across core subjects (English, Maths, Science)
✅ Manage daily operations and staff performance
✅ Build strong relationships with parents, professionals, and external agencies
✅ Ensure a safe, inclusive, and aspirational school environment for all learners
This role is well-suited for an experienced senior leader-such as a Deputy Head or Assistant Head-looking to progress into a Head of School position with clear purpose and measurable impact.
✅ What We're Looking For
QTS or QTLS (or an overseas equivalent) - essential
Proven leadership experience in a school or AP/SEMH setting (Head of Department, SLT, or Headteacher level)
Strong understanding of safeguarding, SEND, school compliance, and Independent School Standards
Confident oversight of curriculum, particularly in core subjects
Strong communication and people management skills
A passion for working with vulnerable learners and a desire to drive change
NPQH (or working towards) desirable
What's on Offer
We don't just invest in students - we invest in you.
Here's what you can expect as part of the team:
Professional Development: We fund in-house and external training, including paid qualifications-last year alone, we invested around £3.5k per colleague!
Financial Security: Death in Service Insurance (4x your salary)
Family Support: Enhanced Maternity/Paternity leave and additional leave for foster carers
Health & Wellbeing:
Medicash cover (including dependants) for optical, dental, prescriptions and holistic treatments-worth up to £900/year
