Job Title: Nurse Colposcopist Reports To: Lead Nurse Colposcopist Accountable To: Matron Grade: Band 7 Unit / Department: Gynaecology Outpatients Location: St Jamess Hospital JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY The Jobholder will carry continuing responsibility for a defined caseload, including the setting of standards of care. The jobholder will provide nursing expertise to a specific patient group and will contribute to the development of the speciality service as well as contributing to the strategic direction of nursing within the Trust. The jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources. The job holder will be able to actively manage her own patients, update and take medical histories, assess that patients cervix / vagina / vulva independently for any abnormal areas and take colposcope directed biopsies of the cervix / vaginal walls, cervical smears and vaginal / endocervical swabs. Following review of the results the post holder will independently action treatments for cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions using loop diathermy, biopsy and polpectomy. The job holder may be expected to manage and lead a team of staff on a daily basis, but not as their direct line manager. The job holder must have accreditation in Colposcopy with the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) to practise as a nurse colposcopist. The job holder must be able to work autonomously within diagnostic colposcopy as an expert practitioner and action findings independently. The job holder will independently review the patients histology / cytology results and take appropriate action. Develop, implement, audit and evaluate patient pathways for Women undergoing colposcopy. Develop / evaluate protocols for patients undergoing colposcopy.
