The duties of the post will be carried out in conjunction with the Consultant by means of daily ward rounds and follow-up care. The Post holder is expected to undertake appropriate investigations and therapeutic procedures (under supervision). They will also maintain adequate medical records of the patients stay in hospital and dictate discharge summaries and enquiries so that they are promptly sent out to the General Practitioner. Patients are admitted via the Acute Admissions Unit to the medical wards some of which are: a ward based non-invasive ventilation bay on the respiratory ward, a Cardiac Centre, gastroenterology, stroke unit including a HASU, and diabetes and endocrinology. The postholder will be working with the surgical team under consultant supervision and be expected to do a 1:10 daytime on-call. The duties of the post will be carried out in conjunction with the Specialist Registrar/Specialty Registrar/F2 doctor by means of daily ward rounds and follow-up care and the attendance at some operating sessions. It is the F1 Surgeons duty to maintain adequate medical records of the patients stay in hospital and to produce discharge summaries and enquiries so that they are promptly sent out to the General Practitioner. Attendance in the Out-Patient Clinic is encouraged for its educational benefits, though there are no specific duties there. The department is a 24/7 unit dealing with unselected patients of all ages. Patients referred from General Practitioners to Surgical and Medical specialties are seen and assessed by the relevant doctors in the Emergency Assessment Unit or ED. In Emergency Medicine placements, the doctor also accepts that they will perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultants, in consultation, where applicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the professions and the department that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in particular juniors should not be required to undertake work if this kind for longer periods or on a regular basis.
