Description
The Prison Librarian (S01) plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation and education of incarcerated individuals by providing access to informational resources that support personal growth, education, and legal information. This position involves managing library services within a correctional facility, ensuring that inmates have access to a variety of reading materials, legal resources, and educational programs. The Prison Librarian will create a safe and supportive environment that encourages literacy and lifelong learning. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the library, including cataloging and circulation of materials, the librarian will work closely with correctional staff to ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations. This position requires a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by incarcerated populations and a commitment to fostering a culture of respect and learning. The ideal candidate will have a background in library sciences along with experience in a correctional environment or a similar setting, enabling them to effectively engage and assist diverse groups of individuals who may have varying literacy levels and needs. This role is essential for promoting positive outcomes for inmates, aiding in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society by enhancing their access to knowledge and educational opportunities.

Responsibilities
Manage the daily operations of the prison library, ensuring efficient circulation and organization of resources.
Develop and maintain a diverse collection of books, legal materials, and educational resources relevant to inmate needs.
Assist inmates in locating and utilizing library resources for personal and legal research.
Organize and conduct literacy programs, workshops, and informational sessions to promote educational opportunities.
Collaborate with correctional staff to ensure compliance with security protocols and facilitate safe library access.
Evaluate and select new materials for the collection based on inmate interests and informational needs.
Provide individualized support to inmates, including one-on-one assistance and guidance on research projects and legal inquiries.
Requirements
Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an accredited institution.
Previous experience working in a library setting, preferably in a correctional or institutional environment.
Strong knowledge of library systems, cataloging, and information management practices.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage a diverse population.
Understanding of the challenges faced by incarcerated individuals and a commitment to rehabilitation through education.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team within a structured environment.
Familiarity with legal research resources and a passion for promoting access to information.
