Youth Support Worker

35 hours per week, Term Time

Temporary up to 2 July 2026

£30,488 – £32,605 / £16.71 - 17.87 per hour (including Distant Islands Allowance)

A vacancy has arisen for a committed and dynamic individual who will embrace the challenge of working with children and young people in alternative and mainstream provision. The post is currently located at Papdale House, Kirkwall and as part of the Support for Learning and Inclusion Team the post holder will work with colleagues with work in outreach as required to meet pupil needs.

The Pupil Support team includes Support for Learning Teachers and support staff, who liaise with staff in educational establishments to ensure the Additional Support Needs of pupils are met. At a universal level, the team work to support pupils in settings. At a targeted level, the team support pupils to enable the maximal engagement of young people in the inclusive learning environment that the setting provides. At a multi-agency level, the team work with agencies involved, to support and facilitate children and young people's engagement, attendance and attainment. This position is part of the alternative education provision of the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) team.

Under the direction of and reporting directly to the Principal Teacher, Support for Learning and Inclusion, the Youth Support Worker is a key part of the Support for Learning and Inclusion Team and tasked with making a meaningful impact on the lives of young people and their families. In this dynamic role, you will help design and deliver engaging alternative learning pathways, working collaboratively with parents/carers, schools and partner agencies to provide comprehensive support. Your work will empower young people facing challenges such as difficulties engaging with education, specific learning barriers, or social anxiety.

As part of the team, you will create informal targeted learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs of young people, helping them to:

• Attend school and engage with education.

• Build self-esteem and confidence.

• Develop life skills and resilience.

• Articulate their perspective.

• Achieve positive post-school outcomes.

This is a key role in the Support for Learning and Inclusion team, working with colleagues in supporting children and young people in alternative education and includes work with children and young people, families and carers and engaging with services.

A recognised youth work and/or training qualification is essential.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service
