Role Overview:
To deliver high-quality statutory social work services to children with disabilities and their families in Oldham. The role involves assessing need, planning and implementing care packages, and safeguarding vulnerable children, ensuring they have the best possible outcomes.
The Children with Additional & Complex Needs Team have an opportunity for a qualified Grade 8 Social Worker to join our busy, dynamic and exciting team. You must be a qualified Social Worker and registered with Social Work England, have experience in safeguarding children and looked after processes.
We are a generic team of social workers who manage cases from initial assessment through to CP, PLO Pre-Proceedings, Care Proceedings, CLA. You will increase your skill set within this service as an all-round social worker building speciality knowledge in Mental Capacity Assessments, Best Interest Meetings, Court of Protection and Inherent Jurisdiction applications. You will be creative in your communication skills and tools with a range of verbal and non-verbal children and young people, complete carers assessments and providing packages of respite care. You will also work towards young people transitioning from children to adult services. (These additional specialist skills can be learned in your new role, yet you must have experience in safeguarding, care proceedings and looked after children).
We have a Short Breaks Service who manage all of the short break packages where there are no identifiable welfare or safeguarding needs that the Children with Additional and Complex Needs Team transfer cases on.

Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake assessments of children with disabilities under the Children Act 1989 and 2004, ensuring a child-centred, family-focused, and multi-agency approach.
- Develop and review outcome-focused care and support plans tailored to individual needs.
- Work in partnership with families, schools, health professionals, and other agencies to coordinate services and improve life chances for children with disabilities.
- Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, participating in child protection enquiries and planning as needed.
- Manage a caseload, maintaining accurate and up-to-date case records and complying with legal and policy requirements.
- Contribute to court proceedings by preparing and presenting high-quality reports and evidence when required.
- Attend and contribute to team meetings, training, and continuous professional development activities.
- Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in service delivery.
- Participate in duty rota and provide crisis intervention where necessary.
Key Requirements:
Essential:
- Degree in Social Work or equivalent recognised qualification.
- Current registration with Social Work England.
- Experience of working with children and families, ideally including children with disabilities.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Children Act, Care Act, and SEND Code of Practice.
- Strong assessment, planning, and case management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team, managing time and competing demands effectively.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- A clear enhanced DBS check.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (reasonable adjustments will be considered).
Desirable:
- Experience in multi-agency working within children’s disability services.
- Understanding of person-centred planning and direct payments.
- Familiarity with Oldham Council’s policies and procedures.
