The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Our diverse teams of over 3,000 skilled and committed professionals come together to provide research, advice, and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for benefit of the environment and economy.

The Science Directorate (SD) delivers high quality, impactful and highly relevant multidisciplinary science. Our people are diverse, talented, engaged and inspired to deliver innovative outcomes.

Do you want to combine your extensive laboratory science and technical expertise with communication and problem-solving skills in a role that provides variety and flexibility? An experienced scientist with an applied microbiology research and development background is required to provide leadership and further development of the Mycoplasma portfolio at APHA which underpins National and International Reference Laboratory functions. The team forms part of a larger workgroup delivering a wide portfolio of science focusing on exotic bacterial pathogens (particularly applied work around Brucella and Mycoplasma) and provides several national and international reference laboratories. Activities include delivering or overseeing statutory testing in support of trade and control programmes, reference laboratory functions and underpinning applied research. The post-holder will be expected to expand their existing expertise to develop knowledge of detection and control of Mycoplasma diseases that present an economic and disease threat in farmed livestock and will deliver and oversee research aimed at developing and implementing new and improved tests and inform control strategies of notifiable and reportable Mycoplasma. Communication with veterinarians and scientists both inside and outside the agency and internationally as well as some international travel is expected.

This role is based at the Weybridge site only. This role is full time, but we may consider two part-time staff on a job-share basis if continuity can be arranged.

  • Provide day to day leadership of the Mycoplasma Team (c. 7.5 FTE) in support of the Exotic Bacteria Workgroup Leader.

  • Develop own focus leading Mycoplasma research by formulating new research project proposals, according to developing expertise and experience and Policy needs.
  • Work with Head of Workgroup, Disease Consultants and Lead Scientists to identify new areas of work or funding that can build on, or add value to, our Reference Laboratory functions and initiate new (collaborative) research project proposals aligned with Policy.
  • Lead research work with a focus on prevention and control of exotic Mycoplasma disease, interacting with collaborators, mycoplasmology networks, attending conferences /workshops and leading visits to, and by, collaborators and specialists. Manage research and design approaches for scientific investigations, ensuring completion of project objectives to the customers satisfaction and within budget.
  • Contribute research expertise in immunology and/or pathogen survival more widely across the Exotic Bacteria team particularly in relation to Brucella activities in this area – join up and exploit synergies in teams.
  • Contribute to delivery of National and International Reference Laboratory functions and Disease Consultancy for Mycoplasma.
  • Develop and maintain competency to work independently under SAPO2 / CL3 containment laboratory conditions to support emergency response. Participate in the disease emergency response in the event of a disease outbreak.

  • Horizon scan for technological developments that may be used to support immunodiagnostic, host-pathogen (and vaccine development) and pathogen control research and development activities.
  • Disseminate research results through scientific publications, reports and presentations, nationally and internationally.
  • Ensure work and associated reporting is completed to Quality Standards ISO9001:2015, and ISO17025:2017 as appropriate.
  • Undertake required safety training courses, comply with the APHA Health & Safety policy and demonstrate understanding of safety requirements expected by all workers at APHA.
