The Breast Unit at University of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust is of high profile and is well regarded in the North East region. It is a breast screening unit with a workload of approximately 500-550 new cancers annually. The Trust is the lead provider for diagnostic breast services in Teesside.



The current 5 Breast Surgeons perform oncoplastic and reconstructive procedures (tissue displacement, mammoplasty, mastopexy, adipofascial flaps, implant based reconstruction, latissimus dorsi reconstruction and lipomodelling). Patients suitable for free flap surgery are referred to South Tees plastic surgery unit. Breast surgery is carried out at both hospitals and most of the day case Surgery is performed at Hartlepool Hospital. The Unit is supported by dedicated breast Radiologist and breast Pathologist and Breast Care Nurses.



There are two Breast MDT meetings which meet weekly at University Hospital of North Tees (Monday and Tuesday). The MDT deals with all cancer patients. There is a separate oncoplastic breast meeting after the main cancer MDT.



The unit has a well established audit system for breast cancers. We participate in regional and national trials and there is scope for participating in ongoing research within the unit.

The post holder will work with Consultant Surgeons and their teams, in the specialty of breast/oncoplastic surgery.



There is a resident on call (middle tier) 1:12. which is incorporated into the post-holder overall job plan and the successful candidate has the option of undertaking this. One post must take part in on calls whilst the second post can take the the post without on calls.



The post holder is expected to participate in audit and teaching within the Surgical Department.



Active participation in breast Research is encouraged with a view to present and/or produces

Publications in the relevant journals and meetings.



Participation in Teesside university teaching and modules for MCh programme.

The successful candidate will play an active role in all aspects of the surgical team commitments and will be responsible for the day to day management of surgical patients. You will be responsible to the consultants and participate in surgery and outpatient clinics. This post will support anyone planning to apply for specialty training. Applicants should have some experience of common surgical procedures.
