What you’ll do…

This role will be instrumental in assessing historic environment considerations, managing surveys, and ensuring that mitigation strategies align with relevant national policies and best practices. It is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of heritage, forestry, and nature recovery, contributing to landscape-scale change while safeguarding the historic environment.

Working closely with the Lead Historic Environment Advisor, this role will support woodland creation and wilding initiatives, before, during and after the delivery of each proposal. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise on historic environment issues and spend the majority of time supporting our woodland creation programme, whilst also supporting land management and wilding schemes. Some travel across England will be required with occasional overnight stays necessary.

This is a Temporary Appointment for three years with the possibility of extension or permanency but no guarantee.

Where you’ll work…

  • Procure and oversee archaeological surveys, ensuring quality assurance and specifications are appropriate for project needs.
  • Interpret survey results and develop mitigation strategies in line with national guidance, such as the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS).
  • Apply a risk-based approach to woodland creation and management, balancing the protection of historic assets with wider scheme objectives.
  • Assess the impacts of woodland creation and wilding programs on different historic environment assets, considering their vulnerability, significance, and the need for proportionate mitigation.
  • Liaise with local and national historic environment authorities to acquire data, seek expert input, and gain agreement on methodologies.
  • Ensure all historic environment information is properly assessed and incorporated into Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes and final project approvals.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams, external partners, and key stakeholders.
