Two (1.6wte) will be based at St Thomas' Hospital and one (1.0wte) at Kings College Hospital.
The post holders will be involved in introducing the COSTED scheme in our emergency departments. The main aim of this scheme is to recruit smokers attending the ED to begin a smokefree journey post-discharge.
The main elements of this will include:
1. Brief advice on smoking cessation
2. Provision of a vape starter kit plus advice on its use
3. Follow up at 1, 3, 6 months
4. Referral to local stop smoking services
This position will help us to achieve the Trusts commitment to drive a culture change towards prevention and to bring the promotion of optimised physical health and wellbeing into the mainstream.
The post holder will be expected to support the delivery of the tobacco dependence treatment initiatives of the Trust aimed at promoting and improving the health of patients. The COSTED initiative will complement the current projects at the Trust, including the LTP project, MECC and Vital 5 programmes.
Duties and responsibilities will include:
· You will engage with patients attending ED, identifying current smokers and applying behavioural change techniques to motivate them to take up the COSTED intervention
· You will manage a caseload of participants for the COSTED intervention independently
· You will develop stop smoking resources and materials including written patient information as required and use existing appropriate resources to inform participants according to individually assessed needs
· You will assist in the management and organisation of work, as required, ensuring effective communication is maintained
· Be able to work collaboratively with all members of the MDT (Multi-Disciplinary Team) and to make referrals as appropriate
· To contribute to the training package offered to staff in very brief advice (VBA).
· To be aware of and contribute towards the delivery of the targets of the projects.
· To be engaged and supportive of the further development and roll out of the tobacco dependence treatment programmes developed by the Trust throughout the hospital.
