Freelance Volunteer Coordinator & Community Engagement Officer
Project: Botanical Colour – The Redpath Way
Contract: Freelance, 12 months (June 2025 – May 2026)
Hours: 16 hrs/week (part-time), with some evenings/weekends
Location: Pembrokeshire, Wales (hybrid role with local travel + remote admin work)
Fee: £9,600 (40% FTE of £24,000) + travel/subsistence
Makepeace Studio CIC is seeking a Freelance Volunteer Coordinator & Community Engagement Officer to support Botanical Colour – The Redpath Way, a year-long oral history and skills preservation project. The project revives and documents traditional natural dye practices pioneered by Margaret and David Redpath of Wallis Woollen Mill. Led by artist Abi Makepeace, this initiative is supported by the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Span Arts, Tenby Museum, and Narberth Museum.
Key elements of the project include:
Recreating historic natural dye recipes
Recording oral histories
Establishing dye gardens
Building a digital learning archive
Delivering workshops, talks, and exhibitions
Publishing a community resource
The role requires regular travel across Pembrokeshire (studio/workshop locations include Carew and New Hedges). You’ll need your own transport and computer. Expenses are covered.
Key Responsibilities
Community Engagement
Promote the project locally and online
Grow a digital community on Instagram/web
Manage comments and DMs to foster connection
Drive traffic to digital content (People’s Collection Wales + project site)
Ensure compliance in safeguarding, data protection, venue coordination
Volunteer Coordination
Recruit, support, and retain volunteers from diverse backgrounds
Onboard/train volunteers in oral history and archiving
Supervise volunteers at dye sessions
Coordinate volunteer appreciation activities
Serve as the main point of contact for volunteers
Project Coordination
Assist with planning and tracking activities
Monitor volunteer engagement and produce reports
Keep tasks aligned with the project timeline
Content Creation
Film and edit short-form video content
Document workshops and dye processes
Contribute to the project’s digital archive
Maintain a consistent and engaging online presence
Logistics & Resource Management
Manage materials, spaces, and equipment
Maintain safe, tidy working environments
Administer budget responsibly
Follow health and safety procedures
Events & Exhibitions
Support event planning and delivery
Help install displays of dye samples and oral histories
Promote events to increase reach and attendance
Essential Skills & Qualities

Driving licence + personal transport
Desirable (Not Required)
Experience in volunteer coordination or project support
Knowledge of natural dyes, sustainability, or textiles

Familiarity with tools like Trello
