Summary

The remit of the Development Unit is to develop and strengthen the University's position at the forefront of teaching, learning and research by inspiring active participation, investment and loyalty to St Andrews. We do this through fundraising for key University priorities and developing mutually beneficial relations with over 70,000 alumni, friends, and benefactors worldwide.

Development launched Making Waves: The Campaign for St Andrews in September 2024, with the ambition to raise £300m. We have raised almost half of that sum to date and the work we do now supports the Campaign on an ongoing basis.

The role of the Alumni Relations team within Development is to engage with our global network of alumni and families of current students to create and enhance opportunities for interaction and involvement for both communities. Our aim is to encourage lifelong engagement with and loyalty to the University, which may translate into volunteer and/or financial support of the University.

We are now seeking a well-organised and highly motivated individual with excellent communication and strong administrative and IT skills to work as an Alumni Relations Assistant within the Alumni Relations Team, as part of the wider Alumni and Supporter Engagement Team in Development. Database work is required and training in the use of the Raiser’s Edge database will be provided. Careful attention to detail, discretion in handling confidential material and a good understanding of the importance of alumni relations and fundraising to the University are also essential.

Ideally, the successful applicant will have previous experience in working within a complex, multi-stakeholder organisation. Based in the busy Development Reception, the role holder will be required to manage the dual demands of staffing the reception area whilst performing alumni relations duties. Excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to communicate with both internal and external visitors of all levels of seniority are essential. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to all aspects of the Development team’s activities, as required, and have a positive attitude towards working across a range of projects and with different teams in Development and across the University.

Employees of the University have access to a wide range of staff benefits including:
• Annual leave of 30 days, plus 5 public holidays
• Financial contribution to relocation where applicable
• Membership of the S&LAS Pension Scheme with generous employer contributions
• Staff discount scheme for local and national goods and services
• Free staff parking, employee Carshare and Cycle to Work Schemes and subsidised local bus travel
• Subsidised sports membership, reduced tuition fees on degree programmes for staff, access to training and development opportunities including LinkedIn Learning, access to library facilities, salary sacrifice scheme
• A range of wellbeing initiatives including membership of Peppy, a health application that connects staff to expert practitioners and personalized support on health matters
