A Vacancy at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

This fellowship is an Advanced Surgical Training Fellowship starting in August 2025 on a 12 month fixed term contract. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO START IN AUGUST 2025

The post is suitable for a post-Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) surgeon with FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) specialist registrars or equivalent, wishing to gain further experience in hip & knee primary and revision arthroplasty surgery, with a view to seeking a consultant post with this specialist interest.

The applicant would ideally be expected to have had significant previous experience in hip & knee arthroplasty surgery. Full GMC registration and licence to practice in the UK is required. The post holder would also be expected to participate in the on-call rota as required.

For applicants in training, applications must be accompanied by the written approval of the candidate’s Postgraduate Dean and Director of Training.

Candidates will be expected to retain their own training number and will need to apply for unpaid leave for out of programme training from their current deanery. Applications are also invited from individuals who have attained their CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery and have finished their training programme.

The successful candidate will be working in Mr Carroll’s service but will also generically support the hip fracture and periprosthetic fracture service.

The Fellow will be trained in the elective and trauma practices of hip & knee primary and revision arthroplasty surgery and will have the opportunity to run independent clinics and independent operating lists depending on their abilities. The Fellow will also be expected to take an active role in delivering arthroplasty for hip fractures and managing the periprosthetic fracture service.

The Fellow will be in theatre approximately 4 sessions per week and, depending on their experience, they will be performing procedures in supervised lists and also, if appropriate, on tandem theatre lists to prepare for independent practice. This will increase as the Fellow’s experience and operative independence increases.
