The control of infection is one of the most important 21st century health care challenges. If you are passionate about making a difference where it really counts and want to influence change and drive progress, a full-time opportunity has arisen to join the Infection Prevention and Control Team atHarefield Hospitalas a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist.

You will be a highly motivated, qualified Infection Prevention and Control nurse or a nurse with extensive clinical experience with evidence of a developed interest in Infection Prevention & Control. You will be responsiblewithin the operational scope of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), facilitating the prevention, surveillance, investigation and control of infection within Guy's and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust hospitals. You will also be expected to be involved in the delivery of IPC education programmes for all staff throughout the Trust (both community and acute). The post holder must be information technology literate (Microsoft Office, Outlook), training will be provided for our Electronic Patient Record and Audit systems.

To work autonomously, managing a caseload of patients within the designated specialty whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patientcare

Support the Matron in providing and delivering appropriate infection prevention and control service that supports clinical and non-clinical staff in all settings to prevent and control infection in both patients, staff and visitors.

Contribute and where necessary update IPC policies and procedures, and monitor compliance, taking responsibility to address any gaps in practice.

Contribute to investigations of infection incidents, outbreaks and decontamination incidents for designated hospital site/clinical group, identifying lessons learnt, sharing best practice and identifying teams or individuals where additional support is required.

Act as a specialist advisor to staff within the hospital site on all matters relating to Infection Prevention and Control including key contact for all clinical and non-clinical teams that support the delivery of excellent infection prevention and control services, e.g. facilities teams such as Inpatient services, Essentia, Occupational Health and Health and Safety.

Support the operational delivery of the High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID) service

Ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.

The Trust’s Directorate of Infection (DOI) comprises Infection Prevention & Control (IPC), Infectious Diseases (ID) and the diagnostic laboratories (Microbiology and Virology). For over a decade, seamless integration of these essential elements has been the hallmark of our service delivery model. The Trust currently reports amongst the best IPC performance in the Shelford group of England’s 10 leading academic healthcare organisations and is widely regarded as a national exemplar for IPC.



This is a fulltime position, accountable to the Matron for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) in the day-to-day site specific (Evelina Women’s & Children’s, St Thomas hospital, Guys Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals) operations of the Infection Prevention and Control services. The post holder will work within a multi-disciplinary team and develop, implement and evaluate a seamless specialist IPC service, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of clinical care.

Ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.

Recognise and avoid situations thatmaybe detrimental to the health and wellbeing of theindividuals.

Actively engage service users through the facilitation of user groups and open days.

Co-ordinate the provision of specialist services to patients, both within hospital and/or in the community setting, effectively liaising with multidisciplinarycolleagues.

Develop and run nurse led clinics where the post holder will co-ordinate the treatment in conjunction with medical staff.

Direct, support, encourage and advise clinical teams, by the provision of specialist knowledge and advice in the care of patients within thearea.

Participate in the promotion of patient centred care, and establish and maintain a supportive relationship with the patient and their family during the period of assessment, treatment and aftercare.

Support and enable patients and carerstomake informed decisions relating to their treatment andmanagement.

Promote high quality clinical care and assist in the development of the specialist service, through the use of evidence-based practice and clinical standards

Provide professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the specialty and act as a resource for education and clinical expertise in the hospital and communitysettings.

Demonstrate appropriate expert practice and highly specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includes history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinicalinvestigations.

Promote and deliver high standards of care at all times, which utilises research-based evidence, and is audited and improvedaccordingly.

Participate in the promotion of the specialist service through dissemination of specialist knowledge, both locally andnationally.

Act as a role model, demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the specialistareas.

Establish, develop and maintain effective working relationship between clinicians, practitioners and managers within the specialty, across the Trust and in thecommunity.

Actively participate in local, national and international networking to maintain and develop expert level of knowledge in thespecialty.

Provide a seamless, high quality service from referral through to assessment, diagnosis, treatment andreview.

Develop and evaluate assessment tools that will ensure an appropriate level of nursing intervention so that patients who present with the most complex needs receive the most appropriate specialistcare.

Act as patient advocate when appropriate, respecting patient confidentiality and privacy with respect for diverse cultural backgrounds andrequirements.

Be designated to take charge of the site-based area in the absence of the IPN holding continuingresponsibility.
