Job summary
To work together with the Superintendent radiographer to ensure the provision of a high-quality service by the MRI department at the Harefield Hospital. 85% of our work is providing cardiac MRI scans to a busy primary angioplasty and advanced heart failure/ cardiothoracic transplant centre.
To promote and maintain the highest standards of patient care within the trust.
Take responsibility in the MRI unit as and when required.
To be part of a team continually committed to improving the service to patients and promoting the hospital nationally and internationally.

To train radiographers and undergraduate radiographers in the use of MRI scanning equipment, and in MRI scanning techniques and procedures.
To communicate appropriately with patients, relatives and other members of staff.
To use tact and sensitivity when asking personal questions, for example checking pregnancy status before examinations.
To reassure and explain to patients who concerns regarding claustrophobia in order may have to gain their cooperation.
To train radiographers and visiting doctors in the use of MR scanning equipment, and CMR scanning techniques
The post holder will maintain good working relationships with multidisciplinary team within the CMR Department and the hospital.
To participate in the continuing development programme for all staff.
To undertake scanning procedures within the MRI unit, in particular Cardiac MRI Scans.
To assess MRI scans for quality and for clinical significance and to take appropriate action where necessary.
To carry out IV cannulation for the purpose of administering Magnetic Resonance contrast agents.
To initiate and assist in patient resuscitation in an emergency.
To move into position, load and operate the power injector when required
To operate the patient monitoring equipment when required.
To clear up after biological or other spills in accordance with the Trust’s infection control policy.
To use initiative and judgement in the prioritising of workload, taking into account multiple clinical factors.

Job summary

Main tasks and responsibilities
• Communication
• To train radiographers and undergraduate radiographers in the use of MRI scanning equipment, and in MRI scanning techniques and procedures.
• To assist and supervise the IV cannulation training in the MRI unit.
• To advise others concerning MRI safety issues.
• To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.
• To communicate appropriately with patients, relatives and other members of staff.
• To explain procedures and reassure patients in order to gain their cooperation. There can often be barriers to understanding to overcome, and patients are often very anxious and require persuasion before and during a procedure.
• To use tact and sensitivity when asking personal questions, for example checking pregnancy status before examinations.
• To reassure and explain to patients who concerns regarding claustrophobia in order may have to gain their cooperation.
• To assist the Superintendent Radiographer in liaising with engineers, and medical physics, and reorganising of workload when equipment malfunctions.
• To train radiographers and visiting doctors in the use of MR scanning equipment, and CMR scanning techniques.
• To welcome and assist visitors to the CMR Department.
• The post holder will maintain good working relationships with multidisciplinary team within the CMR Department and the hospital.
• To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.
• To participate in the continuing development programme for all staff.
• To participate weekend lists when required.
• Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect).
• To undertake scanning procedures within the MRI unit, in particular Cardiac MRI Scans.
• To be responsible for the image post processing and volumetric analysis to be included in the final report by the accountable physician.
• To undertake procedures as part of research projects.
• To liaise with MRI medical staff in the planning of investigations.
• To position and manipulate patients into the correct positions to undertake MRI examinations.
• To assess MRI scans for quality and for clinical significance and to take appropriate action where necessary.
• To carry out IV cannulation for the purpose of administering Magnetic Resonance contrast agents.
• To initiate and assist in patient resuscitation in an emergency.
• To move into position, load and operate the power injector when required.
• To operate the patient monitoring equipment when required.
• To clear up after biological or other spills in accordance with the Trust’s infection control policy.
• To assess whether the patient is fit enough to undergo a particular procedure, and decide the best means of transferring a patient, and of carrying out the procedure.
• To use initiative and judgement in the prioritising of workload, taking into account multiple clinical factors.
• To undertake any other duties relevant to the position of the post holder, as and when necessary, that may be assigned by the Superintendent Radiographer or Imaging Service manager.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT: There will be occasional exposure to distressing situations. Most procedures go well, but problems can arise and develop into emergency life and death situations extremely quickly. This can make for a very unpredictable work pattern.
• Policy & Service development
• To assist the MRI Superintendent in drawing up procedures and policies related to MR scanning.
• To help maintain and recommend improved standards of MRI technique and patient care, in particular within the field of Cardiac MRI.
• To maintain high professional standards as described in the Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics, and to comply with the Standards of Proficiency for Radiographers as set out by the Health Professionals Council.
• Resource management
• To use complex and expensive MRI scanning equipment safely and responsibly.
• To report all equipment malfunctions to the Superintendent Radiographer, and if necessary undertake any further action to ensure the safe operation of the faulty unit.
• To undertake equipment testing as part of the departmental Quality Assurance program, and to take appropriate action if the results are outside of pre-set tolerances.
• People management
• To share responsibility for co-ordinating the staff to receive visitors to the unit, and to demonstrate the functions of any equipment in its working environment.
• To supervise the work of any more junior radiographers, undergraduate radiographers, visiting radiographers or doctors, clerical and portering staff within the unit.
• To assist in the recruitment of new staff members as necessary, in accordance with the trust’s recruitment procedures.
• To be jointly responsible for the induction, training and supervision of all radiographic staff within the MRI unit.
• To formally teach and assist in the practical training of all radiographers, undergraduate radiographers and other staff working in the MRI unit, in particular in the specialist field of Cardiac MRI.
• To be responsible for ensuring that undergraduate radiographers or visiting radiographers working practice complies with all statutory/local safety regulations.
• To organise workload, and co-ordinate porters to bring patients to the department at the correct times.
• To assist with the staff appraisals, and that staff members have a meaningful appraisal/personal development plan that includes feedback to the individual from a selection of internal customers and team members.
• To co-ordinate training program for radiographers within the MR department and to assist them in maintaining for Continuing Professional Development.
• Information management
• To supervise the import and export of confidential image data.
• To ensure that all statistics and records are maintained as required by the Imaging Service Manager.
