Advanced manufacturing is central to economic growth and productivity in the UK. It has been identified as one of eight growth-driving sectors, which will be prioritised in the upcoming Industrial Strategy, based on both existing and emerging strengths. Advanced manufacturing is the production process that integrates advanced science and technology, including digital and automation, to manufacturing.
Manufacturing spreads opportunity across the country, delivering high-value jobs attracting a higher-than-average hourly wage and providing jobs outside of London and the South East. Our industrial base plays an important role in our future economic resilience, as a significant dependency for many of our services sectors and as a driver of innovation. It is also critical to achieving the clean energy mission, which will bring opportunities for the sector.
The Sectors Analysis team is a busy and lively team of analysts. The successful candidate will work in the Advanced Manufacturing Directorate in the Business Group, and have the opportunity to work flexibly across a wide range of exciting projects.
The team’s work includes:
- Work on the Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan, to be published alongside the Industrial Strategy in 2025.
- Analysis to support development of policies to drive growth and productivity in the manufacturing sector.
- Work on high profile UK investment decisions in the manufacturing sector.
- Detailed strategic analysis for the Battery Task-force and to underpin policies to support the Battery sector.
- Work on assessing the manufacturing sectors contribution to growth and productivity.
- Multiple evaluations of large funds to support the sector, including Made Smarter Adoption which supports the uptake of digital technologies among manufacturing SMEs.
- The team are also at the forefront of thinking about what current economic shocks and geo-political factors mean for our major companies and sectors.
This post will be in the Advanced Manufacturing Analysis and Evaluation team; a multi-disciplinary and supportive team of fourteen analysts. The team provides evidence and analysis (economic appraisal, strategic analysis, evaluation, modelling, statistics and briefing) on the advanced manufacturing sector.
The post holder will:
Design and manage monitoring and evaluation (M&E) projects, providing technical leadership on evaluations and advising on M&E plans across the portfolio. You will be responsible for scoping M&E plans and revising existing data collection methods and processes. You will provide advice on ethics and data sharing.
You will work closely with programme and policy leads to ensure that research and evaluation is embedded within programmes and policies.
You will be responsible for the management of external contractors delivering research projects. You will lead analytical quality assurance of the reporting instruments, data, and outputs delivered by evaluation contractors to ensure they deliver robust, impactful findings and achieve value for money.
Design and conduct in-house research projects.
Promote and disseminate research and evaluation findings within the Directorate and the Department to ensure key learning feeds into ongoing and new policy development, and products have maximum impact.
Support and develop a culture of research and monitoring and evaluation in the team, including offering advice on monitoring and evaluation to other teams across the Group.
Line management of a junior colleague.
You will work closely with economists, analysts and a range of officials within the Department. The team works flexibly to support the needs of our policy team. This role will be focused on research and evaluation, but may include other work to support business needs and your development.
