We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our clinical coding team in a trainee position, with progression to Accredited Clinical Coder status.
The successful candidate will benefit from a structured progression pathway, supported by internal and external training, as well as mentoring from experienced and supportive colleagues. A commitment to independent personal study is also required.
Clinical Coders working towards professional accreditation are paid at NHS AfC Band 3. On achieving Accredited Clinical Coder status, they progress to Band 4. After completing a further one-year development plan and attaining Standard Exceeded level at individual audits, they advance to Senior Clinical Coder Band 5. Achieving Accredited Clinical Coder status is a requirement of this role.
All clinical coding staff at LWH benefit from the ability to work flexibility to meet the department’s needs. The team operates a flexible working policy, with core hours from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday.
Remote working is available to staff who maintain appropriate audit scores and productivity levels. Staff working remotely must also be able to attend on-site meetings, events, and training at short notice.

The role involves reading and analysing medical and surgical terminology documented in patient records and translating this into alphanumeric codes using ICD-10 and OPCS classifications. These codes are then input onto the hospital's Patient Administration System.
Clinical Coders are expected to learn and remember clinical coding rules and conventions, local policy and National Clinical Coding Standards and work to strict deadlines. They must be accurate and precise in their work and have good time management skills. The successful candidate must be conscientious, have an eye for detail and a willingness to learn.

The post holder will analyse electronic clinical records to extract complex diagnosis and procedure information and accurately apply clinical coding standards and conventions to translate this into nationally and internationally recognised codes, using the ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classification systems.
They will be responsible for inputting assigned clinical codes onto the Trust’s Patient Administration System (PAS) within the strict deadlines agreed between the Trust and user organisations.
The post holder will assist in monitoring the completeness and timeliness of clinical coding by reporting any problems to the senior clinical coding team.
They will participate in the clinical coding and data quality audit process and assist the Trust to maintain high data quality standards by raising anomalies found in the recording of data on the PAS or within electronic patient records with appropriate staff and reporting any unresolved problems to the senior clinical coding team.
The post holder will participate in regular internal and external training to continually develop their clinical coding and professional skills.
They will study for the National Clinical Coding Qualification to attain Accredited Clinical Coder status.
The post holder will be responsible for maintaining a portfolio of continuous professional development.
