We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.

Can you establish and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders at all levels?

Are you able to present complex issues clearly and succinctly?

Have you got experience in designing or delivering policies?

If so, then this is the perfect role for you!

This is an exciting opportunity to provide policy and strategy leadership on international and domestic shipping decarbonisation issues within the Department for Transport’s Maritime Environment and Decarbonisation division. This is a high-profile area with strong interest from Ministers, particularly as the global transition to a greener maritime sector is gathering momentum through the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the UK’s work to reduce emissions from domestic shipping.

Your job will be in the GHG Negotiations and Emissions Pricing team and your main focus will be in delivering Green Shipping Corridors – routes between two or more ports where zero emission vessels are operating commercially. Green Corridors help demonstrate to the sector how new clean fuels and technologies can work in practice, driving the global maritime sector towards a net zero future.

You will work with and build relationships with officials from other countries to provide the right framework for the sector to deliver Green Corridors. This includes working closely with stakeholders across Government, industry, academia and Non-Government Organisations, to deliver clear plans for UK Green Corridors, and disseminating learnings from the programme across the maritime sector to drive change. Strong engagement skills will be key in securing the collaborative working with the sector required to deliver these Corridors.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Build, manage and leverage relationships with the UK maritime sector, delivery partners, other government departments and international partner countries, to deliver our targets on UK Green Corridors. This will involve engaging with stakeholders, both domestically and internationally, to identify opportunities. This could include organising industry roundtables, designing new policy initiatives and identifying or delivering multilateral opportunities to promote the delivery of Green Corridors.
  • Lead the delivery of any research funds necessary to support the maritime sector’s Green Corridor decarbonisation goals. This will include working with Innovate UK, the delivery partner of the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme, to ensure value for money, maximise benefits and disseminate learnings. This will require effective project management skills and ability to manage programmes of work.
  • Help frame international research and development programmes within the team to ensure UK priorities are represented and programmes support the delivery of Green Corridors. This would require effective strategic thinking and stakeholder management domestically and internationally.
  • Provide broader support for team priorities which could include development of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and preparations for negotiations at the IMO to develop and improve regulations for maritime transport.
  • This post will give the post-holder the opportunity to hone strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills, learn about R&D and innovation, as well as develop project management skills.
