Crynodeb

We require an SHO to work in the General surgery /Colorectal / breast/urology department, starting 02/04/25 - 05/08/25 (4 months). At present this post does not have educational approval and is therefore a service post. This post is not recognised for training and full registration with the GMC will be required to undertake this position.

This post offers a good training opportunity for a basic surgical trainee who has a career interest in general surgery/Breast but needs more experience to obtain a position. The post holder will have been exposed to a wide range of surgical conditions both elective and emergency.

Initially the SHO will sit in on the clinics indicated on the job plan but as experience is gained the post holder will see his/her own new patients and discuss management with the consultant. Education objectives will be set at the beginning of the post and progress towards these will be regularly reviewed. Opportunities for clinical research are available and the SHO will be expected to take part in on-going research and clinical audit projects within the surgical department.

This job includes participation in on call rota.
• Routine and emergency patients must be seen and admitted expeditiously.
• Ward rounds and visits to individual patients may be necessary.
• Keeping such records as may be required; these must be dated and initialled, together with any other related administrative duties including discharge and clinic letters.
• The patient's discharge summary paperwork is to be completed prior to the patients discharge. Clinic letters are dictated within clinic and typed by the secretaries.
• Supervision of the Foundation year 1 / 2 doctors when performing clinical duties.
• Duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s), in consultation where possible with colleagues both senior and junior. Additional commitments arising under this paragraph are exceptional. In particular, the doctor will not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

The Hillingdon Hospital is situated in Uxbridge in the south of the London Borough of Hillingdon. It has over 500 beds and is managed by Chief Executive Patricia Wright. The catchment area offers a wide range of specialities, treating 25,000 in-patients a year. Amongst these services is a large Accident and Emergency Department, which deals with approximately 90,000 attendances a year.
