Crynodeb

This role sits within the bilateral negotiations part of the LACE (Labour, Anti-corruption, Climate Change and Environment) team, focused in particular on Labour Policy and working on negotiations of Labour provisions in free trade agreements. The role is expected to become a deputy chapter lead on Labour Policy across multiple negotiations.

Labour is a relatively new topic in trade policy, with the role supporting our objective here to secure provisions that address the trade-distorting effects of Labour on global trade and fair competition to help maintain the UK’s high standards in this area. The role includes working with legal text and legal colleagues, working on negotiation preparations and engaging directly with trade partners as well as collaborative working across the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and with relevant policy teams across government. The role will also be involved in development of broader Labour and trade policy, and work with stakeholders as appropriate.

  • Acting as a deputy chapter lead on Labour negotiations. Working to the G7 chapter lead, this will likely at first mean involvement in the on-going negotiations and other negotiations as progress is made. This role involves preparation for and support during engagement with partner countries, as well as substantial engagement across Whitehall and with external stakeholders between negotiating rounds, as necessary.
  • Actively establishing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including the DBT Employment Rights team and other OGDs with a Labour interest, to develop effective and robust positions for negotiations.
  • Working with others in the team to build knowledge of how Labour Policy can be supported through trade policy. The successful candidate will work closely with the chapter lead on their negotiations, but also with others in the team working on Labour in other trade negotiations and wider Labour trade policy. They will work with this group to help build capability in this ever-developing subject in trade policy.
  • Being a flexible and proactive team member. LACE team members may need at times to work flexibly across the range of issues we cover, depending on the priorities at the time.
