About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to come and join Leicestershire County Council’s Extended Domestic Abuse Team, part of the Family Help Service. Our aim is to provide meaningful support to families and young people experiencing issues around domestic abuse, with a focus on early intervention and a whole family approach to addressing harmful behaviours.

We are currently looking for a Support and Intervention Worker to join a team of workers who:

  • Provide an immediate response to families who have been referred to Children and Family Services due to a domestic abuse incident where a quick response is indicated. This includes making timely (within 48 hours) telephone and face to face contact with families who have been referred due to an incident of domestic abuse. Contact with families may involve unannounced home visits where contact cannot otherwise be established, securing consent to work with them and sharing information as needed
  • Work in partnership with families to undertake brief and analytical assessment of needs and verify risk assessments. From this they will agree immediate priorities with the families, forming a short-term plan of action with clear responsibilities for family members and worker. This may involve undertaking practical tasks alongside the family to ensure immediate needs are met
  • Work with families to establish support networks and safety plans to increase safety for children, and ensure that the voice of the child is reflected within these
  • Provide short term support including signposting and onward referral for families who have been referred due to a domestic abuse incident but who do not require an ongoing service from Children and Family Services
  • Liaise with other providers and agencies such as housing, Domestic Abuse organisations, schools, CAB, GP Surgeries, etc to ensure families are accessing the support that is available for them

About You

To apply for this post, you must:

  • Has a passion for wanting to support families to reduce the harm caused to their children from exposure to domestic abuse, and a belief in the ability of families to make positive changes
  • Has experience of working in a ‘whole family’ approach, including both adult and child victims and perpetrators (adult causing harm) in relation to domestic abuse in a statutory or voluntary setting and an ability to offer both a level of support and challenge to families in order to make changes and increase safety for their children
  • Has a thorough and up to date understanding of the legislative, procedural and research base underpinning work with children and families who are experiencing domestic abuse as well as knowledge of the local services available to support families
  • Has an ability to work proactively and persuasively with individuals who may be apprehensive about engaging with services, using a range of techniques that encourage active participation whilst upholding the principles of trauma informed practice
  • Is able to identify indicators of risk and carry out effective risk assessment and safety planning in relation to concerns around domestic abuse and has experience of working in a multi-agency way to manage risks and concerns
  • Has an ability to work creatively but consistent with the principles/models of evidence based practice and interventions
  • Has a Level 3 qualification (NVQ3) OR a recognised professional qualification (e.g. Social Work or Youth Work) OR substantial experience in providing direct support to children and families

The post holder will also need to have a full driving license and access to a vehicle.
