The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. The purpose of this job is to develop the UK tick and tickborne disease surveillance scheme for livestock as part of completion of project SE0566 (Building UK capability for control of zoonotic arthropod-borne diseases of animals and their vectors). This will involve laboratory-based research to identify ticks and detect tick-borne pathogens. Liaison with APHA stakeholders (Discipline Leads and Species Groups) and external agencies such as UK HSA will be an important component of this position. The postholder will also contribute to further research projects within the Vector-Borne Diseases workgroup (VI2) and will provide consultancy on arthropod-borne disease when required. Preparation of reports and manuscripts based on the outputs of VI2 projects is a key component of the post. The post involves work with ACDP Category III / SAPO4 viruses in high containment laboratories. Staff and laboratory management will form part of the responsibilities of this post. The postholder will provide management oversight and delivery of tick-borne disease surveillance and research for APHA.

  • Support the UK National Tick and Tick-borne Disease Surveillance Scheme for Livestock as a key deliverable for project SE0566.
  • The postholder will contribute to research projects with a focus on arthropod-borne viruses of livestock. This will involve contributing to in vitro and in vivo experimental models.
  • The postholder must have the ability to work within a small team of researchers dedicated to vector-borne pathogen research. Collaboration with scientists across the Agency and with those working in external bodies (Government Agencies, Universities, etc) is an essential component of the post. Consultation on arthropod-borne diseases may be required.
  • The postholder should be able to develop research on vector-borne pathogens in line with Defra and APHA policy. In addition, clear communication both orally and written is needed to exchange information effectively and increase the scientific reputation of APHA.
  • Management of staff, laboratories and resources will be required. The postholder may be required to hold a Home Office personal license and contribute to in vivo experimental studies.
