To lead and manage the Maxillofacial, Orthodontic and Restorative laboratory service at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. To deliver, maintain and develop a high quality technical service for Maxillofacial, Restorative Dental and Orthodontic patients referred by their consultants. To lead the digitisation of the laboratory.

1. Managerial

· Responsible for the line management of lab team, ensuring the staff within the team are supported motivated and developed.

· Budget holder for the lab, and for the procurement of consumables and equipment used in the lab

· Ensure implementation and regular revision of MDR (Medical Device Regulations), MHRA (Medicines, Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), C.O.S.H.H.( Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), Health & Safety Executive and Trust directives and guidelines into laboratory practice.

· Be the Trust’s designated holder of the lab licence in accordance with the MHRA

· Be the Radiation Protection Lead for the OMFSORD Department ensuring IRMER regulations

· being complaint with European Medical Device Regulation (EU) 2017/745

· Accountable for service delivery and quality control

· Provide leadership to the laboratory team in order to drive delivery on initiatives and projects

· Responsible for ensuring timely and accurate record keeping such that all data is managed, protected and stored in accordance with national rules and Trust policies.

· Work collaboratively with the wider management team.

· Responsible for the clinical and lab equipment, its use maintenance and replacements in line with Trust policies and procedures

· Hold a responsibility to themselves and others in relation to management of risk. To develop a risk register for the lab.

eTechnical / Clinical

· Oversee and be responsible for all of the work produced within the setting of the Maxillofacial Laboratory.

· Use judgement and analytical skills to interpret, understand and to assess suitability of requested work and then provide options where necessary.
• Offer expert opinion on current technological advances and their application to current or future practice.
• Liaise with senior clinical staff and undertake highly specialised complex Orthognathic Surgery planning and surgical splint construction for Maxillofacial Surgery. Including model planning and model surgery for mandibular maxillary and bi-maxillary procedures. Organising case conferencring between the post holder and orthodontic and maxillofacial consultants leading to the design and construction of splints, surgical wafers and other associated appliance for orthognathic surgery.
• Oversee and participate in the prosthetic restoration and management of patients with severe disfigurement following surgery or trauma.
• To design and manufacture appliances involved in the treatment for syndromic patients, particularly cleft lip and palate, patients with temporomandibular dysfunction and speech therapy techniques.
• To design and manufacture the complete highly complex range of fixed, removable and functional Orthodontic appliances, intra-oral and extra-oral attachments.
• To design and manufacture fixed/removable restorative dentistry including implant planning and provision.
• Undertake intra-nasal sectional impressions and subsequent manufacture of septal restorations/obturators for patients under general anaesthetic.
• Delivery of digital hub in for all referring hospitals in the BOB STP area including surgical planning and guide delivery for OMFS, Restorative Dentistry, ENT, Plastics and Craniofacial Surgery. This includes the design and delivery of cranioplasties, mid-face implants and orthognathic planning for complex surgical cases.
• Management and development of digital orthodontic service including model storage and digital surgical planning and case prototyping.
• Management and delivery of a regional maxillofacial prosthetic referral service.
• Design and manufacture prototype devices and medical equipment as a result of collaboration and research with other Departments.
• To give technological assistance and advice in surgeries, operating theatres and wards as necessary.
• To undertake work from other clinical specialities within the Trust.
• To operate complex specialist equipment.
• Competent in the use of specialist equipment e.g. high speed grinding, trimming and polishing for prolonged periods with intense concentration and using high levels of eye hand co-ordination. Use highly developed skills of manual dexterity such as accurately bend and adapt specialist wires whilst working to very fine tolerances.
• Competent with a wide range of chemicals, specialist dental materials that require an understanding of the materials science of such products e.g. methylmethacrylate monomers and polymers.
• Will be required to lift weights, including and up to 25kg (with help if necessary). Over 25kg with the use of mechanised lifting equipment. This activity may happen up to 10 times a week for short periods. Be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods in restricted positions e.g. standing whilst casting impressions, trimming models, polishing appliances using machinery for grinding and polishing.

The post holder can be expected to be exposed to respiratory irritants and moderate levels of dust which is unavoidable but controlled and monitored. You may be exposed to infectious material form patients’ impressions or appliances which must be treated in line with current best practise
