Summary

Engaging with political stakeholders is a priority for the Charity Commission, as we are accountable to Parliament and have a close working relationship with various government departments. As Parliamentary Officer, you will maintain a high-quality service to forge excellent internal and external working relationships, supporting the integrity, strategy and profile of the Charity Commission. You will play an important role in supporting our engagement with parliamentarians as part of our external relations team. You will monitor parliamentary proceedings and keep abreast of political developments, advise colleagues on parliamentary engagement, and effectively and efficiently manage the handling of incoming correspondence from Members of Parliament and Members of the Senedd.

You will also be integral in delivering a proactive programme of stakeholder engagement and providing support to senior colleagues for events and meetings. You will additionally play an important coordination role for the directorate, supporting the Director of Communications & Policy and senior leaders to ensure its coordination and accountability.

Key responsibilities:

Ensuring our parliamentary correspondence process is managed efficiently and effectively by meeting deadlines, ensuring progress and providing handling advice on letters to parliamentarians from senior colleagues.Managing the monitoring of parliamentary activity, including relevant parliamentary questions, debates, Select Committee hearings, All Party Groups and announcements and changes in Ministerial roles; and providing concise, insightful updates to senior colleagues. This includes producing a weekly monitoring report and monthly dashboard, and managing the monitoring service include regular liaison with the provider.Drafting ministerial and parliamentary briefings for senior colleagues, including our Chair and our Chief Executive Officer.Working with the External Relations Manager in delivering a proactive programme of Parliamentary engagement, ensuring effective relationships with parliamentarians, Select Committees and All Party Groups, to build the Commission’s accountability to Parliament and increase understanding of our role. This includes the post holder maintaining systems for mapping the key opinion formers and influencers in Parliament, government and the charity sector, and tracking the effectiveness of the Commission’s key relationships; and ensuring this information feeds into the Commission’s engagement programme with strategic stakeholders.Co-ordinating on behalf of the Director and senior staff: senior leadership team meetings, performance management processes, committee paper delivery and risk management.Responding, where required, to requests sent to the Director, commissioning others to complete where required and influencing and negotiating as necessary to meet deadlines.
