Summary

Job Summary:
The Head of Section is responsible for overseeing the operations and management of a specific section within the sanctuary. This role involves leading a team of animal carers, volunteers, and other staff to ensure the highest standards of care and welfare for the animals, as well as contributing to the strategic development and operational efficiency of the sanctuary.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership and Management:
o Lead, motivate, and manage a team within the designated section, providing guidance, support, and development opportunities.
o Coordinate daily operations, ensuring that tasks such as feeding, cleaning, health checks, and enrichment activities are completed efficiently and to a high standard.
o Foster a positive team environment, promoting collaboration and communication among staff and volunteers.
2. Animal Care and Welfare:
o Oversee the health and well-being of all animals within the section, ensuring that their physical, behavioural, and psychological needs are met.
o Work closely with veterinarian and other specialists to develop and implement care plans, treatment protocols, and enrichment programs.
o Ensure that all staff and volunteers are trained in the proper handling, care, and management of the animals in the section.
3. Operational Management:
o Manage the resources and budget for the section, including supplies, equipment, and staff hours, ensuring efficient use of resources.
o Monitor and maintain the section’s facilities, coordinating with maintenance teams to ensure a safe and clean environment for both animals and staff.
o Ensure compliance with all relevant legal, health and safety, and animal welfare standards.
4. Training and Development:
o Support the develop of and deliver training programs for staff and volunteers in your section, focusing on animal care, safety procedures, and sanctuary protocols.
o Identify and implement opportunities for professional development, including workshops, certifications, and continuing education.
o Conduct regular performance reviews, providing feedback and setting goals for team members.
5. Public Engagement and Education:
o Collaborate with the sanctuary’s education and outreach teams to develop and deliver programs that promote public awareness of animal welfare issues.
o Represent the section in public events, educational tours, and media appearances, sharing knowledge and promoting the sanctuary’s mission.
o Engage with visitors, donors, and supporters to foster positive relationships and encourage ongoing support for the sanctuary.
6. Strategic Planning and Development:
o Contribute to the strategic planning and development of the sanctuary, identifying opportunities for growth, improvement, and innovation within your section.
o Participate in sanctuary-wide initiatives, such as fundraising campaigns, policy development, and projects.
o Work with the Sanctuary Manager to set and achieve long-term goals for the section, aligned with the overall mission and objectives of the sanctuary.
7. Record Keeping and Reporting:
o Maintain accurate records of animal care, health, and behaviour, as well as staff schedules, training logs, and other operational data.
o Prepare and present regular reports on the section’s activities, achievements, and challenges to senior management.
o Ensure that all documentation is up-to-date and compliant with regulatory requirements.

Working Conditions:
• The role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions and may require handling animals of various sizes and temperaments.
• The position requires flexibility in working hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Exposure to potentially stressful or emotional situations, such as dealing with injured or sick animals.
• The role will involve manual handling, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
