Are you looking for a challenging position within the Maternity Service?
An opportunity has arisen for us to recruit an additional Maternity Support
Worker to our team in the Antenatal Services.
The Day Assessment Unit and Antenatal Natal Clinic cares for approximately 12,000 + episodes of care in each area per year for women who have medium – high risk pregnancies who are cared for on an outpatient which enables women to remain at home with their families.

Applicants need good organisational skills, a sense of humour and the ability to remain calm when under pressure. Applicants must be competent in venepuncture and computer skills and have completed the Care Certificate.
Previous nursing auxiliary / maternity support worker experience is essential and working within the NHS would be an advantage.

The job role includes performing venepuncture after appropriate training , screening patients for diabetes, training patients to test blood glucose levels / dealing with specimens and samples. The role includes undertaking maternal observations such as blood pressure, temperature and pulse once appropriate training completed. In addition, the role will involve organising and booking appointments, assisting in antenatal clinics, retrieving notes as well as many other clerical and administrative duties including data input .

1. To carry out fundamental midwifery procedures as delegated by trained members of nursing and midwifery staff, which have been taught, subsequently supervised and in which the Maternity Support Worker has proved him or herself competent.
2. To assist in providing phlebotomy services (only when has attended Trust Venepuncture training and completed Trust competency) within the Antenatal Day Assessment Unit / Ante natal Clinic.
3. To assist in performing Glucose Tolerance Tests as per Maternity Procedure.
4. To train women, birthing people diagnosed with gestational diabetes to perform blood glucose monitoring (only when has attended Trust Venepuncture training and completed Trust competency) give dietary advice (following in - house training) and schedule appointments as per guidance from midwives.
5. Carry out basic maternal observations of temperature, pulse, blood pressure, urinalysis and labelling and taking MRSA / urine samples documenting them accurately in the woman’s maternal records and reporting deviations from the normal to the midwife.
6. To assist in Ante Natal Clinic when necessary – including test room, clinic room or administrative duties.
7. To undertake clerical duties which will include accessing patient’s notes, liaising with Health Records department, filing, making appointments and using the computer system in accordance with Trust policies and guidance.
8. To act as chaperone when required, always maintaining privacy and dignity.
9. To undertake essential ward housekeeping tasks (including cleaning and restocking of supplies) in parallel with the domestic ward staff to maintain a pleasant and safe environment including some cleaning and stocking of clinical areas.
10. To support safe delivery of care across the maternity unit by working flexibly providing care where required.
11. To assist women with personal hygiene requirements
12. To assist with the patients’ meals as directed by members of midwifery staff.
13. To assist in the provision of beverages and light refreshments for patients and relatives as instructed by midwifery/nursing staff.
14. To assist and advise mothers with infant feeding and care of the newborn in accordance with GWH Maternity Infant Feeding Policy (Baby Friendly Initiative)
15. To assist in escorting patients to other departments.
16. To document, where appropriate any care provided.
17. To report promptly any concerns relating to mother or baby to a midwife.
18. To communicate effectively with mothers, families, and all members of multi-disciplinary team.
