A rare and exciting opportunity to work as a Clinical Reviewer within the National Patient Safety Team, has arisen. This is a part time (0.6 WTE) role.

As a Clinical Reviewer, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team delivering the statutory national patient safety functions of providing advice and guidance to the NHS on reducing risks to patient safety, including through National Patient Safety Alerts.

The key responsibility of the post holder is to undertake allocated aspects of clinical review of patient safety data. Clinical Reviewers are key to a core process through which all reports of death and severe harm made to national incident reporting systems (LfPSE) and other sources are reviewed to identify new and emerging risks. The role involves supporting a clinical review function that not only provides complex analysis drawn from multiple data sources but interprets and synthesises often incomplete and conflicting information alongside wide clinical insights into healthcare interventions, services and ergonomics (human factors).

This clinical insight is combined with expertise in patient safety to provide specialist input to review and response stages of the national advice and guidance journey, including the following:
• Recognising potential new or under-recognised issues that may emerge from a range of sources including the National Reporting Systems (NRLS/LFPSE/STEIS/PSIRF) and clinician and patient contact
• Undertake desktop research, review and analysis of highly complex patient safety information (including patient safety incident data), link with relevant external expertise and provide reports and briefings to inform internal and external decision-making on an appropriate response to the issue
• Providing expert judgement to determine what patient safety issues require action and the nature and urgency of that action, as an individual and collectively within the process of discussion, debate, and constructive challenge that underpins an effective national patient safety response function

The NHS England board have set out the top-level purpose for the new organisation to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all, which will inform the detailed design work and we will achieve this purpose by:
• Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their people and patients and reduce health inequalities.
• Making the NHS a great place to work, where our people can make a difference and achieve their potential.
• Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care
• Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation
• Delivering value for money.

• Working with the Patient Safety senior leadership team and all colleagues, helping them provide leadership and support for a visionary approach for Patient Safety
• Working with wider NHS England colleagues in achieving organisational objectives
• Support where required the team responsible for the oversight of National Reporting systems ensuring that it helps drive the priorities of the national patient safety agenda and the NHS
• Develop their own skills and the skills of colleagues through seeking informal and formal opportunities to mutually share, learn, and further develop highly specialist techniques and strategies related to advice and guidance functions

These responsibilities will be subject to change as the national patient safety function evolves and post holders will be expected to respond flexibly to changing circumstances.

This post requires a current clinical registration and recent experience associated with the delivery of patient facing clinical work.
