Crynodeb

Theatre Royal Plymouth is a registered charity, inspiring a lifetime of creativity for audiences, artists and participants throughout Plymouth and the wider region. As the principal home of performing arts in the Southwest, we engage and inspire many communities, creating memorable experiences for people from all backgrounds. TRP do this by creating and presenting a breadth of shows on a range of scales, with their extensive creative engagement programmes, by embracing the vitality of new talent and supporting emerging and established artists, and by collaborating with a range of partners to provide dynamic cultural leadership for the city of Plymouth.

Forming a vital part of our Technical Department, the Wardrobe has a professional dressing and maintenance team that prides itself on excellence and works to a high standard across all our shows on both The Lyric and The Drum stages.

The role of a Dresser is both demanding and highly rewarding, with responsibility for changing actors in and out of costumes often in high pressured moments side of stage, in the dark. You would also be required to pre-set and track costumes throughout a performance.

The role of Wardrobe Maintenance assistant is to Launder, sort, iron and steam the costumes to prepare them for the show. This can be fast paced and requires utilising industrial machines.

No qualifications are necessary but previous professional experience as a dresser is desirable. The successful candidate must be able to work a complete show call, which can include technical rehearsals and will include matinee performances, generally Thursday and Saturdays.

Employment is subject to the demands of each show and will be on an ad hoc/ occasional basis. In-house training will be given.

The candidate must be available from 1st October till 16th November 2024 at the point of employment and then work will be distributed accordingly.

The Role:

This role is a casual position as a Dresser (to include wardrobe maintenance) for the Wardrobe department within Technical and Wardrobe. Dressing is predominantly an evening job but will include matinee calls, which are usually on a Thursday and Saturday.
An acceptance of a show call will include all the performances for that production -typically 1-2 weeks but can be up to 2 months.

Technical rehearsals can be full days or typically 9 hour days. The role is part of the backstage team that delivers the high-quality experience for our patrons.

Maintenance calls are typically mornings for 4 hours.

Here are some of the key duties you will undertake, and the preferred skills required:

To dress actors as required in a supportive, professional capacity. Pre-set/re-set costumes, which would include the collection and distribution of costumes for technical, evening and matinee performances.

Wardrobe maintenance calls – hand and machine-washing costume with the ability to press and steam garments quickly and to a high standard

An ability to work under pressure within a large team and to be quick-thinking and independently

The ability to temporarily repair any item of costume to ensure the smooth running of the performance. Basic hand sewing skills are desirable but not essential.

Follow detailed and sometimes complex dressing plots, with the ability to create new written plots for productions during a technical rehearsal.

To assist with the smooth running of all performances and associated work including occasional loading and unloading of wardrobe pans and equipment, wigs equipment and miscellaneous items.

Attend any rehearsals and associated meetings as requested including departmental and training meetings.

The maintenance and tidiness of all technical wardrobe areas and the safe operation of equipment.

To be aware that overtime is sometimes necessary particularly during technical periods.

Occasional assistance with wigs/make-up and props. Can include wig dressing – additional training would be provided.

To fill in accurate records of hours worked. To be punctual to times specified on call sheets and to report absences as far as reasonably possible in advance to allow cover to be arranged.

To upkeep the TRP values base system built on Collaboration, Creativity, Quality and Diversity.

Backstage staff are required to wear appropriate black clothing during all performances and rehearsals.

To be aware of your responsibility under the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Theatre Royal’s Health and Safety Policy and to be aware of risk assessments and safe systems of work for departmental equipment and accident reporting.
