About the Role: As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you will perform routine day-to-day operations within the Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion departments. You will rotate between all sections within these specialties, ensuring adherence to approved methodologies and procedures. In this role, you will work autonomously without direct supervision and participate in a 24/7 rota, including weekend working, extended hours, and out-of-hours cover as needed by the department. Key Responsibilities: Analytical and Judgement Skills: Review requests and highlight relevant clinical histories for accurate data entry. Reject non-conforming specimens and prioritize urgent ones. Process clinical specimens unsupervised, adhering to established SOPs. Analyze pathology specimens and provide technically accurate results. Interpret patient results to assist in diagnostic and treatment decisions. Communicate directly with service users (e.g., consultants, staff nurses, GPs) regarding test results and specimen requirements, maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity. Ensure unusual results are reported to senior or clinical staff promptly. Organize individual daily workload and delegate tasks to support staff when appropriate. Familiarize with and implement internal and external quality control procedures. Participate in audits, quality control reporting, and trend analysis. Address potential technical or resource issues by suggesting resolutions. Engage in discussions on clinical and technical laboratory issues and contribute to process improvements. Planning and Organizational Skills: Communicate patient results effectively with service users. Maintain regular communication with Departmental Managers and Senior Biomedical Scientists. Participate in laboratory meetings for information dissemination and problem-solving. Ensure accurate electronic and paper record-keeping. Physical and Patient Care Skills: Apply time management, prioritization, and teamwork skills. Perform maintenance and troubleshooting on complex equipment. Prioritize workflows to produce timely and accurate results, contributing to high-quality patient care. Monitor quality control and take remedial action when necessary. Comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies and undertake annual training. Policy and Service Development: Assist with creating, maintaining, and implementing Standard Operating Procedures. Perform risk and COSHH assessments and incident reporting. Promote lean working and quality improvements. Ensure accuracy of patient data and compliance with ISO 15189 standards. Participate in departmental meetings and adhere to Trust policies. Financial and Physical Resources: Maintain adequate stocks of reagents and consumables. Report equipment or building failures to the estates and facilities department. Management and Leadership: Produce and implement a personal development plan. Promote equality and diversity in the workplace. Supervise, train, and coach junior staff. Maintain a professional portfolio and undertake CPD activities. Reduce sickness absence and promote health and well-being. Information Resources: Ensure efficient use of equipment and reagents. Undertake other duties as required by the Trust. Person Specification: Essential Qualifications and Training: IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree and registration portfolio. Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD). Desirable Qualifications: Leadership qualification. MSc Biomedical Science. Advanced training relevant to the role. Essential Experience: Experience in an accredited laboratory. Familiarity with Quality Management Systems and ISO 15189 standards. Strong communication skills. Desirable Experience: Experience with departmental instrumentation and specialized techniques. Shift or out-of-hours working experience. Supervisory or training experience. Knowledge and Skills: Thorough understanding of laboratory techniques, legislation, and safety measures. Proficiency in Pathology IT systems and awareness of technological advances. Enthusiastic, patient-focused, and calm under pressure. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Computer literacy and a flexible approach to work.
