This role sits in the Trade in Goods team. As a team, we negotiate trade agreements, work with other countries to make trade easier for UK businesses and represent the UK in large international organisations like the World Trade Organisation. Our team is vibrant, hard-working, and collaborative. We pay particular attention to providing training and support to all colleagues so they can develop the skills and knowledge to enjoy and excel in their role.
In this role, you will work on an area of trade policy called ‘Technical Barriers to Trade’ (TBT). You will represent the UK’s TBT policy positions with different countries and at the World Trade Organisation. You will regularly travel to international meetings in Geneva and will build close relationships with partner countries. A key part of this role is working across the Devolved Administrations and other Government Departments to advise them on compliance and international handling of UK policy. You will also work on resolving trade barriers by working with UK embassies, business stakeholders, and other DBT teams. The international negotiations, complex policy work, and domestic impact make this role exciting and important.
To be successful and happy in this role, you will need to able to build strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders and government officials. Attention to detail, the ability to balance competing priorities on tight timescales, and to remain calm under pressure will also be important.
Key Accountabilities
- Represent the UK and defend UK policy positions at the WTO and in bilateral engagements with member states.
- Build collaborative relationships and influence others, working with a wide range of stakeholders inside and outside Government.
- Prioritise a variety of portfolios effectively, often working to external deadlines.
- With the support of the team, produce high-quality products and positions that show attention to detail and grip on complex issues.
