The Radiography Assistant Practitioner (AP) is a member of the direct imaging team who supports the Diagnostic Radiographers to meet the needs of patients attending the Radiology department. APs participate in the X-Ray service, imaging patients within their agreed scope of practice. The post holder will undergo an apprenticeship to learn on the job clinical practice aspects of plain imaging and complete a Foundation Degree over two years. The post holder may be required to work shifts including evenings, and weekends.

Service Delivery:

· Learn to conduct, under the supervision of a practitioner radiographer or more senior staff, a specified range of uncomplicated general radiographic examinations upon a pre-defined range of patient types.

· Learn to work to set standards & protocols, functioning in accordance with best practice and in a manner that meets professional, departmental and legal standards and requirements.

· Will function as an “operator” as defined by IRMER regulations

· Learn to produce images of sufficient quality for the diagnostic and treatment process in accordance with professional, technical and legal standards

· Assist in more complex radiological examinations under the supervision of senior staff.

· APs may be required to take part and support in the provision of a 24-hour radiographic service (x-ray and fluoroscopy), under supervision once qualified. Organisation and administration:

· Learn the importance of the multidisciplinary team and be able to work alongside senior staff to assist in the efficient control of workflow patterns within the department.

· Learn to perform all administrative tasks required, including patient reception & data entry onto Radiology Information System.
