Applications are invited for one academic position as a Principal Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, University of Hertfordshire within the Foundations and Software Engineering academic subject group.
The department has an international reputation for teaching and research, with nearly 90 academic staff, divided into five academic subject groups. In addition, we support 150 adjunct staff, and 70 research students and postdoctoral research staff. With a history going back to 1965, the department supports one of the largest cohorts of students in the UK, including thriving online provision.
Main duties and responsibilities
You will contribute to teaching and learning activities including; delivering high quality teaching, learning and assessment to our students at all levels. As a principal lecturer, you will be expected to have sufficient experience to lead and develop modules and teaching materials in the advertised areas.
You will also provide pastoral and academic support for home and international students, will play an important role as part of a team incorporating the Head of Department or Subject Group Leader, programme leader, module leaders, the professional, administrative, and technical staff (if applicable), the Dean of School and the Associate Deans of School. You will also be expected to contribute to teaching in mainstream areas of Computer Science, and modules with particularly large groups of students, and supporting the running of the Academic Subject Group, including the possibility of line managing and appraising colleagues.
Skills and experience required
You will have demonstrable experience of teaching and lecturing the computer science subjects of the advertised specialism at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as possessing breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the advertised discipline to develop teaching. You will have demonstrable experience and expertise in all of the following areas:
• Computer architecture, digital circuits, microcontrollers, low-level programming (assembly, C/C++, RTOS).
• Embedded systems, sensors, signal processing, and IoT
It is expected that you demonstrate through your personal statement, extensive experience in delivering teaching and designing module at all levels in ALL the specified areas.
You will possess excellent communication skills in English and be able to contribute to curriculum development. You will also need experience of different types of assessment and higher education quality assurance. It is desirable that you have a track record of publication, external research funding, collaboration across disciplines. Whilst face to face teaching is expected, you may be required to teach in a blended mode or wholly online.
Qualifications required
An undergraduate degree or equivalent level 6 qualification in Computer Science or a related subject area, AND a PhD (completed or close to completion, e.g. has submitted final thesis) in a Computer Science/relevant field or significant demonstrable experience in the required areas are essential.
