Job Description: Housing Adviser (Housing Options & Homelessness)

Location: Keynsham, with flexible working arrangements from home and Council offices in Bath and Midsomer Norton
Contract: Ongoing, starting ASAP
Pay Rate: £13.63 per hour (pay award pending)

Job Purpose:
Housing Services are seeking an enthusiastic Housing Adviser to join the Housing Options and Homelessness Team. The role involves providing direct one-to-one advice to customers, assessing their needs, and creating Personal Housing Plans to prevent or relieve homelessness. The adviser will work flexibly, including face-to-face appointments, drop-in sessions, and telephone advice.

Key Responsibilities:

Customer Interaction:

See customers face-to-face by appointment, during drop-in sessions for homelessness on the day, and provide telephone advice.
Visit housing applicants in supported housing, temporary accommodation, and at home when they are threatened with homelessness.
Advice and Support:

Provide a wide range of housing options and advice to customers in housing difficulty or those looking for alternative accommodation to prevent homelessness.
Communicate effectively with applicants, landlords, and professionals.
Motivate applicants to take active steps to prevent their own homelessness or find alternative accommodation.
Personal Housing Plans:

Assess the needs of each applicant and create Personal Housing Plans to meet those needs.
Assist households in accessing temporary accommodation and transitioning to more permanent housing.
Collaboration and Advocacy:

Support applicants to work in partnership with multiple agencies to find housing solutions and prevent homelessness.
Attend professionals’ meetings and collaborate with various stakeholders to support housing applicants.
Specialist Areas:

Lead on specific areas for the team, such as young people, mental health, domestic abuse, and private renting.
Legislation and Policy:

Utilize knowledge of the Housing Act 1996 (as amended) and the Homelessness Reduction Act.
Stay informed on social housing, welfare reform, and local government policies.
Administrative and IT Skills:

Manage a complex and varied workload efficiently.
Use IT systems effectively, with knowledge of the Civica/Abritas system being desirable.
Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

Experience delivering frontline services in housing.
Knowledge of the Housing Act 1996 (as amended) and the Homelessness Reduction Act.
Strong communication skills and the ability to motivate and support applicants.
Ability to assess needs and compile Personal Housing Plans.
Desirable:

Experience with the Civica/Abritas system.
Wider knowledge of social housing, welfare reform, and local government policies.
