Crynodeb

In DHSC, we are proud of our purpose – to enable everyone to live more independent, healthier lives for longer. To achieve this, and create a great place to work, we have four values: we are inclusive, we constantly improve, we challenge, and we are agile. If this sounds like an environment you’d like to work in, we’d love to hear from you.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the UK Government’s most senior medical adviser, and a permanent secretary in DHSC. An independent appointment, the CMO works across Government to ensure evidence is at the heart of health policy.

The CMO provides clinical and public health advice to officials and Ministers across Government, provides professional leadership for the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) within DHSC and is head of the public health profession.

The Private Secretary is responsible for providing technical and policy support to the Chief Medical Officer and the Deputy Chief Medical Officers, working closely with the rest of the Private Office.

The post holder will play an important role as the interface between the CMO and DCMOs, ministerial teams and officials across government, working with all sides to provide clinical and scientific advice. This includes developing and managing relationships across DHSC and other Government departments at all grades, as well as working closely with global experts, No10 and senior leaders across the health system.

The main responsibilities of the role are set out in the section below. Please note, these may be subject to change as policy priorities flex.

Working hours within Private Office are longer than the Civil Service norm and out of hours and weekend work will be required. As a result, the post-holder will receive a role-related allowance in addition to their base pay.

Candidates applying must be willing to undergo security clearance at SC level.
