The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the UK Government’s most senior medical adviser, and a permanent secretary in DHSC. An independent appointment, the CMO works across Government to ensure evidence is at the heart of health policy.
The CMO provides clinical and public health advice to officials and Ministers across Government, provides professional leadership for the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) within DHSC and is head of the public health profession.
The Private Secretary is responsible for providing technical and policy support to the Chief Medical Officer and the Deputy Chief Medical Officers, working closely with the rest of the Private Office.
The post holder will play an important role as the interface between the CMO and DCMOs, ministerial teams and officials across government, working with all sides to provide clinical and scientific advice. This includes developing and managing relationships across DHSC and other Government departments at all grades, as well as working closely with global experts, No10 and senior leaders across the health system.
