Salary: £27,334 to £29,777 per annum to Saturday Enhancement to working 7 hours 24 minutes for 1 in 4 Saturdays.

Contract Type: Permanent

Working Pattern: Full-time (37 hours per week/1 in 4 Saturdays (Based at Crawley)

Location: Chichester Registration Office (Edes House 27 West Street Chichester PO19 1QW) and Worthing Registration Office (Worthing Library, Richmond Road, Worthing, BN11 1HD). You will be required to work one day a week at Crawley Register Office (Crawley Library, Southgate Avenue, Crawley, RH10 6HG) Final arrangements to be confirmed with the successful candidate.

Interview date: 01 July 2024. If selected for an interview, this will take place at Crawley Register Office (Crawley Library, Southgate Avenue, Crawley, RH10 6HG).

The successful candidate will be required to undertake approximately 6 to 8 weeks training based at Crawley Register Officer. Paid travel will be provided for this role. Pool cars, bikes and public transport via our travel portal will be available.

You will need to be able to travel independently around the county, including to areas that may not be easily accessible by public transport. Emergency cover may be required in other offices. Pool cars and bikes available.

The Opportunity

This opportunity is in the Ceremonies Team, You will be required to provide specialist advice, interpret complex legislation and confidently explain legal requirements in order to carry out statutory registration functions.

Delivering good customer service and to remain accurate under pressure will be key to success in this role, as you will need be confident face to face.

The successful candidate will:

  • Interpreting complex marriage & civil partnership legislation
  • explaining the legal requirements of statutory and non-statutory ceremonies on the phone
  • taking bookings for notices and ceremonies on the phone
  • Responding to written requests for information /guidance
  • taking notices of intent from members of the public in any of our offices around the county. These appointments are required by law to be face to face. (Crawley, Horsham, Worthing and Chichester)
  • Preparing and checking legal paperwork to enable a ceremony to go ahead.
  • The role also involves training in and occasionally registering & conducting ceremonies in WSCC ceremony rooms and the licensed venues around the County. However, the majority of ceremonies are conducted at weekends by our sessional registrars.
  • Registering ceremonies on the Registration online system

You will need the ability to deal with people at very emotional and sometimes challenging times in their lives whilst also having the opportunity to interact with a diverse range of individuals, providing them with a warm and welcoming experience throughout the registration process.

The ideal applicant will have experience of working within a customer service environment, with effective communication and IT skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

You will be educated to a degree or equivalent qualification or experience, demonstrating that level of applied knowledge in specific areas e.g. statutory legislation, frontline service, researching, evaluating and accurately recording information.
